Take-Two Releases New Official Statement on GTA 6 Online + PC

GTA 6 is getting closer to its November release, and Rockstar Games has spent much of the game’s marketing showing what makes its next open world different from previous Grand Theft Auto games. Now, however briefly, Take-Two has addressed the future of its Online mode. GTA 6‘s Vice City is returning alongside a much larger version of Leonida, while Jason and Lucia are at the center of a story built around a world filled with more detailed NPCs, activities, and interactions. That is the heart and soul of GTA 6, according to Take-Two.

GTA 6‘s open world is going to be fun to explore in its Online mode when it releases, although any and all involved have stopped short of putting a date on it, instead focusing on the world. That makes perfect sense. Rockstar has built Leonida around a level of detail that goes well beyond simply making the map larger, with GTA 6 being massive even in comparison to Red Dead Redemption 2. Still, many will be curious about the multiplayer component, and Take-Two is sticking to its guns on messaging.

GTA Online Support Continues Beyond GTA 6, PC Increasingly Important

Take-Two has now released a new official statement that provides an important clarification about GTA 6‘s online mode. During an earlier shareholder meeting, Take-Two briefly addressed its plans for GTA 6, GTA 6 Online, and what will happen with the current iteration of GTA Online. In short, the statement reiterated that GTA 6 will launch as a single-player game while also making clear that the existing form of GTA Online will continue to receive support after GTA 6 releases:

“GTA 6 is a single-player title and is due to release this November. We will continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6 release and beyond.”

Furthermore, addressing when GTA 6 will release on PC, Take-Two also stated: “The strategy of the company is, over time, generally speaking, to launch on any platform for which there’s a meaningful audience. But that isn’t always the case, and certainly if platforms were no longer viable, we would change that strategy. And I would note that the PC platform is becoming more and more important to our company over time.”

Rockstar has not officially revealed a release date, launch window, name, or feature set for a GTA 6 multiplayer experience, with it simply being an obvious addition to GTA 6 one day. The GTA 5 version is simply too lucrative (still) for Rockstar to not pursue that. The PC version, although likely to happen one day, also remains shrouded.

There is also one intriguing piece of information about what Rockstar may be doing with the multiplayer component to GTA 6: legal filings from the company’s employment dispute reference an “online 32-player format” that was described as highly confidential. The filing does not identify it as GTA 6 Online or confirm that 32 players will be the final limit, but it is the clearest public reference yet to an online format connected to Rockstar’s unreleased work.

Take-Two is clearly separating the November launch from the future of its online business: GTA 6 is coming as a single-player title, while GTA Online will continue after its release and beyond. How that separation continues, or ceases to exist, once Rockstar is ready for GTA 6 Online remains to be seen, but at the very least, Rockstar is ensuring that Vice City and Leonida are all players want them to be.
