Last night was a blue wave blowout. Democrats posted gains in races they haven’t won in decades. They flipped the House and the Senate. They beat Halo composer Marty O’Donnell in Nevada and made a Dragon Ball Z composer the next attorney general of Texas. It’s the first time a Democrat will hold that office in over 30 years.
These were both separate races, to be clear, but their nods to gaming and anime draw an interesting contrast and show the scale and scope of MAGA’s defeat in the face of an incredibly unpopular war, sky-high fuel prices, and an unprecedented level of naked corruption. This was O’Donnell’s second time running for Congress in Nevada and the second time the Bungie veteran failed.

In 2024, he failed to win the primary for the state’s 3rd Congressional district. In 2026, he won the primary and the backing of President Donald Trump, but failed to parlay that and an online echo chamber of angry, anti-woke gamers into on-the-ground support. In 2024, Susie Lee eked out narrow victory with only 10,000 more votes than the Republican. In 2026, she beat O’Donnell by roughly 50,000.
Her campaign staff celebrated her victory in part by reposting the old viral video “Halo Theme Song Performed By 80 Guys In 1 bathroom + Girls Point of View.” “Enjoy your retirement,” she told O’Donnell, who previously tweeted that he never wanted to be a politician. “Susie has a lot of class. And it’s all low,” is what the Halo composer said in response.
In Texas, the headlines will be all about Gina Hinojosa, the state’s first Latina governor, and James Talarico, the state’s new Democratic Senator-elect. But the blue wave in the lone star state didn’t stop there. Nathan Johnson won the race for attorney general in a major upset that will have long-lasting consequences for the legal landscape there. But prior to politics, Johnson briefly operated a music company back in the ’90s that made music for Dragon Ball Z.
Johnson was the composer on the first 67 episodes of the Ultimate Uncut Special Edition redub for Funimation, as well as the company’s English dub for Tree of Might, The World’s Strongest, and even Wrath of the Dragon, for which Johnson reportedly learned how to play the ocarina. Those were released over 30 years ago, back when Texas had its last Democratic attorney general. Out on the campaign trail, Johnson said he wasn’t afraid to sue the Trump administration if it violated the law in Texas.
