Highlights
- Prismatic Subclasses in Destiny 2 offer crazy builds early on, but Exotic class items will take them to the next level.
- More Aspects and Fragments may be added to Prismatic in the future, but it is unclear if existing abilities will be included.
- Debate over adding Light and Darkness abilities to Prismatic – Some argue for build variety, while others fear power creep.
As early as the first week of the Final Shape’s release, players have been able to put together some crazy builds with Destiny 2’s Prismatic Subclasses. Yet while Prismatic is already in a good spot, it’s expected to become even better once players can begin getting their hands on different rolls for Destiny 2’s new Exotic class items.
Even beyond the impact the new Exotic class items will have on the Prismatic Subclasses, it’s likely that more Aspects and Fragments will become available for the Prismatic Subclass in the future, given that this has happened for the Strand Subclasses shortly after their release. However, The possibility of Destiny 2 specifically introducing more of the existing Light and Darkness Subclass abilities to the new Prismatic Subclasses is currently unclear.

Should Destiny 2 Add More Light and Darkness Abilities to the Prismatic Subclasses?
Many players feel that expanding upon the selection of Light and Darkness abilities that are available in the Prismatic Subclass could be a natural progression for Prismatic, though Bungie’s plans for the Prismatic Subclass are unknown, at least for the time being. Despite the uncertainty though, the case could be made either way for Bungie to leave the new Prismatic Subclasses as they are, or to bring in more of the existing Light and Darkness Subclass abilities.
The Argument For More Prismatic Abilities
- Expand upon the build variety available with the Prismatic Subclasses
- Allows players to carry over their favorite, meta abilities
- Encourages players to use the new Subclass
With the current selection of supers, grenades, and melee abilities available in the new Prismatic Subclasses, there are a lot of different options for what kind of builds players can make with these Subclasses. However, some of the most popular abilities from the Light and Darkness Subclasses didn’t make the cut for the new Prismatic Subclasses for some characters. Consequently, it can feel like many of the abilities available in the Prismatic Subclass are incomplete, which could be resolved in future updates for Destiny 2 by adding these missing abilities.
For example, the only Prismatic Subclass to receive the Strand Grapple ability is the Hunter’s Prismatic Subclass. Considering how iconic this ability is for the original Strand Subclasses in Destiny 2, not having access to this ability for Titan and Warlock Prismatic builds can be a bit of a letdown. With the Strand Grapple grenades being just one of many abilities that some of the different Prismatic Subclasses don’t have access to, this has left some fans wanting more out of the Subclass, meanwhile leading players to neglect Prismatic and return to their existing Light and Darkness Subclass builds.
The Argument Against More Prismatic Abilities
- Subclass buffs and debuffs make up for the limited selection of abilities
- Discourages players from using the existing Light and Darkness Subclasses
- Balancing Implications in PvE and PvP
A strong argument against adding more of the Light and Darkness Subclasses to the new Prismatic Subclasses is that this would likely be a slippery slope that could lead to the Prismatic Subclasses eventually having every ability in the game. While the builds that would come out of this could be the ultimate power fantasy, this would essentially power creep the original Light and Darkness Subclasses in Destiny 2 to the point where there would be little to no reason for using these Subclasses instead of Prismatic.
This kind of abrupt and extreme potential shift in Destiny 2’s meta is a controversy waiting to happen, so it might be best for Bungie to leave the Prismatic Subclasses as is. While these new Subclasses may not have all of the fan-favorite and meta abilities from the preexisting Subclasses, Prismatic arguably makes up for this with the different kinds of buffs and debuffs that players can finally synergize together, without the need for adding more abilities from the other Subclasses.
