The Elder Scrolls 6’s Rumored Setting Has a Huge Edge Over Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls 6’s Rumored Setting Has a Huge Edge Over Skyrim

I nearly rolled my eyes when I opened my laptop to see another The Elder Scrolls 6 update this week. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen for the speculation that The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually upon us, only to find it’s yet another breadcrumb in the rumor trail. We’re coming up on 15 years since Skyrim, and nearly a decade now since the next mainline game was officially announced. The Elder Scrolls fans will remember that trailer: a short, rolling shot of what seemed to be the setting for the game’s next rugged adventure—unfortunately, that’s all that Bethesda has graced us with up until even now. However, with fresh reports and hints from former Bethesda lead designer Bruce Nesmith, I find myself returning to the same old question about what’s next for The Elder Scrolls.

These reports have only added fuel to the existing rumors, with The Elder Scrolls 6 reportedly taking players to Hammerfell, potentially around the coastal region of Iliac Bay. I’ve previously expressed my excitement that Hammerfell could offer something Skyrim never did, and one of these potential features is maritime exploration. Bruce Nesmith has recently discussed the potential for boats and naval combat in The Elder Scrolls 6, which gives these rumors a little more weight. Yet again, none of this confirms what Bethesda has planned, but it feels like one step closer to what we will see once the game finally releases.

A new Skyrim mod is bringing Hammerfell to life in impressive detail, raising expectations for whatever Bethesda ultimately does with The Elder Scroll

Hammerfell has actually been one of the most frequently speculated settings for The Elder Scrolls 6 ever since Bethesda first teased the next installment. That’s what confused me when I first saw the new batch of reports everywhere: it seemed like there was a lot of new coverage for old news. But the reason these reports are resurfacing now is that there’s finally something substantial for fans to discuss. In an interview with GoHumanize earlier this month, former Skyrim lead designer Bruce Nesmith spoke about the possibility of returning to Iliac Bay. “Setting Elder Scrolls VI in Iliac Bay, you’re setting yourself up for a big expansion into seafaring stuff, and even if you never go under the water, think about all the things you could do on top of the water.”

The speculation peaked again on October 29, when a report from The Verge suggested that Xbox could reveal the game’s full title as The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel as soon as November, coinciding with Skyrim’s 15th anniversary. This gave years of fan theories about Hammerfell plenty of renewed attention, and though none of this has been confirmed by Bethesda, a potential announcement on the horizon brings excitement for many of us who have been waiting years for the next mainline game.

In an interview with GoHumanize earlier this month, former Skyrim lead designer Bruce Nesmith spoke about the possibility of returning to Iliac Bay.

I recently explored how Skyrim mods like Beyond Skyrim: Iliac Bay offer a glimpse into what Hammerfell and High Rock could bring to The Elder Scrolls 6. With Hammerfell widely rumored to be the game’s next setting, I think that Bethesda has an opportunity here to introduce something that Skyrim never fully embraced: water exploration. If, like me, you prefer to play vanilla Skyrim, you’ll know that the rivers and seas don’t prove to be much beyond inconveniences while traveling. So, rather than treating them as obstacles, the Iliac Bay could become a gateway to sailing, naval combat, costal settlements, and underwater discoveries. This would give players an entirely new way to experience Tamriel, something that I think is well deserved after such a long wait.

Interestingly, the last mainline entry to feature Hammerfell prominently was The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, released back in 1996, which also explored parts of High Rock. While the region has appeared in The Elder Scrolls Online, it has been 30 years since players last experienced it in a numbered installment, leaving plenty of room for Bethesda to reimagine it with modern technology.

Former Bethesda lead designer Bruce Nesmith’s comments clearly suggest that water wouldn’t just be another environmental feature: “We might get entire skill trees allowing you to walk on water or have boats that allow you to do more than just sail your boat.” It’s really exciting to think you could chart your own route across the Iliac Bay and even encounter threats beneath the waves. Skyrim had fierce dragons roaming the skies, Vampires and Werewolves fighting on land, Draugr and Falmer lurking in the dungeons below—so introducing danger to the bay would make for an even more dynamic adventure. The series has always placed so much emphasis on freedom and discovery, so it seems like an obvious next step for Bethesda to make traveling by sea feel just as rewarding as exploring on foot.

Of course, Hammerfell isn’t without its critics. There has been much discussion among The Elder Scrolls community about whether it is the right choice for the next mainline game. So much of Tamriel remains pretty much unexplored: provinces such as Elsweyr, Black Marsh, and Valenwood offer plenty of different environments, cultures, and histories that Bethesda could draw from.

That said, I don’t think Hammerfell would necessarily mean Bethesda is revisiting old ground. Although the region has appeared in previous games, including Daggerfall and The Elder Scrolls Online, there is plenty more of Redguard culture that could fit into a modern mainline installment. Its coastline and proximity to the Iliac Bay give Bethesda an opportunity to rethink what exploration could look like. Despite that, after 15 years of returning to Skyrim, I still feel like the caves, dungeons, and mountains are integral to the series’ identity. Whether Hammerfell is the final setting or not, I hope Bethesda uses the next game to give players something new to discover, without abandoning the handcrafted environments that keep us returning to Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim.
