Paramount confirmed some disappointing news about the fate of the in-development Avatar: The Last Airbender AAA RPG, confirming the game has been shelved. The Avatar RPG was previously in development by Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has stood the test of time as one of the most beloved original franchises from Nickelodeon. The animated series following the adventures of Aang, the last surviving member of the Air Nomads, ran for three seasons and later spawned a spin-off sequel following a new Avatar in The Legend of Korra. Avatar received several video game adaptations during its television run, and has since featured in Nickelodeon’s various crossover titles and even crossed over with Magic: The Gathering. However, an exciting in-development Avatar RPG has now officially been confirmed to be off the table.

Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG from Saber Has Reportedly Been Shelved
Paramount Games’ Senior Vice President and Head of Creative and Production, Shawn Kittelsen, shared the fate of the Avatar RPG. Kittelsen shared that, when Paramount Games Studio was established after the Skydance merger, the Avatar: The Last Airbender role-playing game was not in production at the time. The statement suggests that the game was quietly shelved internally by Paramount in a situation similar to that of the recently revived TMNT: The Last Ronin. Kittelsen cited a lack of “conviction or support” to match the aspirations for some of Paramount’s game projects before the merger. The Avatar RPG was originally expected to release sometime in 2027 or 2028.

The cancellation of the Avatar RPG will likely be disappointing news for many fans of the beloved Nickelodeon series. The game was given a working title of “Ice Wars” while in development at Saber and was set to take place thousands of years before the story of the original Avatar. Saber had teased a “vibrant world” and the ability for players to “master all four elements” within the game, though greater details about the game’s story were never shared. Kittelsen suggested that the studio was not ruling out a future AAA Avatar game, though he did say it “might come in a different iteration.”
A big-budget Avatar game would be notable as the franchise has largely confined to smaller games and crossovers in recent years. Aang and friends last appeared in their own game in 2023 with the release of Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance, which largely saw mixed reception from fans and critics. Avatar characters have appeared in multiple Nickelodeon crossover games, including Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl and the Nickelodeon Kart Racers games. Aang and Katara were also confirmed to be coming to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds as DLC characters, set to debut in October 2026.

The 20th anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender brought plenty for fans to be excited about from the franchise. Nickelodeon officially revealed a new sequel series in early 2025, titled Avatar: Seven Havens, starring the next Avatar to succeed Korra after the conclusion of The Legend of Korra. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is also set to debut in October 2026 as a sequel to the original series, featuring grown-up versions of the original series’ main cast. Even with the cancellation of Saber Interactive’s AAA RPG, Avatar fans should have lots to be excited about from the franchise’s future.
