The Legend of Zelda is getting another major Wilds Era release in 2027, giving players a chance to learn more about the mysterious Zonai civilization and Hyrule’s history. Some of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom’s biggest mysteries revolve around the Zonai, an ancient civilization whose technology and influence are central to the adventure, and they’re making a comeback.
With The Legend of Zelda celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, there’s been plenty of attention surrounding the franchise’s past and future. Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom remain especially important, having introduced millions of players to a much more open-ended approach to Zelda. Although Nintendo has previously suggested that it’s ready to explore new ideas for future games, there’s still plenty worth revisiting about the Wilds Era.
Zelda: Secrets of the Zonai Takes the 40th Anniversary Celebration into 2027
Nintendo and Dark Horse Books have announced The Legend of Zelda: Secrets of the Zonai, a massive 472-page hardcover book scheduled for release on March 30, 2027. Previously expected to launch in October 2026, the book was delayed to give the publisher additional time to prepare its release. The standard edition costs $59.99, while a special Hero’s Edition is available for $119.99. Both versions explore the development of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

There’s quite a bit packed into Secrets of the Zonai, including its artwork, characters, world design, and the history of the Zonai civilization. Nearly 300 additional pages explore early sketches, concept art, storyboards, and commentary about how Tears of the Kingdom came together. The most interesting section for lore enthusiasts may be the 80-plus pages dedicated to Hyrule’s history, exploring events that took place before the kingdom’s founding and offering more insight into the Zonai. The book also includes interviews with Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, and art director Satoru Takizawa.
Collectors can also purchase the Hero’s Edition of The Legend of Zelda: Secrets of the Zonai, which includes several extras beyond the standard hardcover. There’s an exclusive cover, a green slipcase inspired by the Zonai, an art print featuring Link and the Sages, and a cloth map of the Depths. Perhaps the biggest addition is a replica of Zelda’s Secret Stone of Time, one of the important objects featured throughout Tears of the Kingdom.
Secrets of the Zonai could also serve as something of a farewell to the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom era, although Nintendo hasn’t confirmed that interpretation. Both games have left a massive mark on the franchise, and it’s unclear whether the next original Zelda adventure will revisit this version of Hyrule or move in a completely different direction. That said, Nintendo has previously indicated it would be leaving the Wilds Era of Zelda behind sooner rather than later.
