After a significant delay, the first Professor Layton game in nearly a decade (or over a decade, depending on what you think of Katrielle) finally has a release date of December 10, 2026, as announced in today’s Nintendo Direct.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam was first announced way way back in 2023, but didn’t have a release date attached. It was shown several times after, eventually getting a release window of 2025 and later being delayed to this year. The game takes place in an American steampunk-themed town called Steam Bison, to which Professor Layton has been summoned by his mentee, Luke. As with past Layton games, this will be a point-and-click adventure focused on logic puzzles. This time, the puzzles are designed by QuizKnock, a Japanese quiz media group, following the death of original puzzle designer Akira Tago in 2016.
Tago’s death is likely at least part of the reason we haven’t seen Professor Layton in so long. The last main game he starred in was the prequel game Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy waaaay back in 2013, though there have since been a few spin-offs and crossovers like Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, which starred Layton’s daughter, Katrielle. Developer Level-5 also saw a significant slowdown in its releases between 2019 and 2024, particularly in the U.S., which also might have played into why Layton has been so quiet.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is actually a direct sequel to Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, a game which came out for Nintendo DS and mobile all the way back in 2010. If you want to catch up on the story from that game, it’s mercifully still available on mobile, so you don’t need to dig up a physical copy.
