The New Yoshi Game Getting a Release Date Might Actually Be a Bad Thing for Switch 2 Gamers

Nintendo recently revealed the release date for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and while it’s great that Switch 2 gamers now know when they can play the game, it does mean that there probably won’t be a general Nintendo Direct any time in the near future. The Nintendo Switch 2 was an immediate success when it first launched last year, quickly becoming the fastest-selling video game console of all time thanks to launch games like Mario Kart World and strong launch window titles like Donkey Kong Bananza.

Switch 2 gamers have had a solid 2026 so far, with Mario Tennis Fever launching last month and Pokemon Pokopia earning rave reviews when it launched earlier in March. Nintendo likes to keep a release cadence of about one first-party/exclusive game per month — a pattern that will keep with Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream releasing in April. For a while there, the Switch 2 game for May 2026 was a mystery, which led many to assume that a general Nintendo Direct (as opposed to a Partner Showcase or Indie World show) would be happening soon. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case.

It’s Officially a New Era for the Nintendo Switch 2

With the recent release of Pokemon Pokopia, the official Pokemon on Nintendo Switch 2 era has begun in earnest for fans and players.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book’s Release Date Was Announced Outside a Nintendo Direct

Instead of making the announcement during a Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced the Yoshi and the Mysterious Book release date with a new trailer that was released on Mario Day, confirming that the game will drop on May 21. A side-scrolling platformer, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book continues the franchise tradition of employing unique art styles, with the new game featuring a striking stop-motion gimmick. However, the fact that Nintendo decided to reveal its May release date with a trailer instead of a Nintendo Direct does seem to suggest that we aren’t getting another general Nintendo Direct until June.

Right now, the Switch 2’s calendar is filled up all the way to June. The confirmation that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is releasing May 21 means that Nintendo no longer needs to host a general Direct until then. Nintendo almost always hosts its biggest Nintendo Direct of each year in June, coinciding with the time that was once E3, and things are lining up for 2026 to be no different. So if you are something that is holding out hope for a general Nintendo Direct to air in March, it may be better to keep your expectations in check. It’s certainly still possible, but it doesn’t seem likely since Nintendo revealed Yoshi and the Mysterious Book‘s May release date.

As for what’s in store for Nintendo Switch 2 gamers later in 2026, that remains to be seen. We know that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is scheduled to launch later this year, and we also know that since Pokemon Winds and Waves aren’t coming until 2027, there is most likely a secret big holiday 2026 game that still has yet to be announced. Speculation points to a new 3D Super Mario game releasing on the Switch 2 in time for the holidays, but that remains to be seen.

We also know that Splatoon Raiders is in development for Switch 2, though it is still without a solid release window at the time of this writing. Nintendo may also use cross-gen games like Rhythm Heaven Groove to help fill the gaps in its 2026 release calendar. Time will tell, but Nintendo fans shouldn’t expect to learn more until June 2026, barring any unforeseen Nintendo Directs that may take place before then. While Switch 2 gamers wait for more news on future games, they can mark their calendars accordingly for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream in April.
