The Next Call Of Duty Won't Be On PS4, Says Activision

Over the last few days, rumors have circulated about the next Call of Duty game being play tested and ultimately set to release on the PlayStation 4, but Activision has now denied the claim. Call of Duty looks to be leaving the last-gen platforms in the dust.

“Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true,” Call of Duty posted on May 4. “The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”

For the first time since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts, the franchise will skip the PlayStation 4 console. This social media response from the official Call of Duty account only confirms it won’t release the upcoming game on PlayStation 4, but presumably this means the Xbox One console generation is also getting left behind.

For what it’s worth, Call of Duty still shipped last year’s Black Ops 7 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but it was only a matter of time before developers would look to cut ties with the older platforms. The technology is always advancing and hardware limitations were already showing, as players have compared Call of Duty graphics between the current and last-gen platforms.

Battlefield Studios chose to ditch the older consoles for Battlefield 6 as the developer said, “The vision of Battlefield 6 wouldn’t have been possible on the previous generation.”

We don’t have any official reveals about this year’s new Call of Duty game, but rumors suggest it will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Whatever the title may be, Microsoft announced the new Call of Duty won’t launch directly into Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. However, CoD games will arrive on Game Pass after about a year post-launch.

Black Ops 7 and Warzone recently received midseason updates with new weapons, maps, and additional game modes. There’s even a RoboCop crossover and limited-time event. Call of Duty’s Season 3 patch notes are confirmed to be longer than some of the world’s most historic documents, but we detail all the major changes here.

GameSpot has reached out to Activision to get confirmation about Xbox One, and what this news means for ongoing support of Warzone on those last-gen platforms.
