The Silence Around Star Wars Eclipse Has Left Fans Scratching Their Heads

The Silence Around Star Wars Eclipse Has Left Fans Scratching Their Heads

There is certainly a lot of Star Wars content out there, but fans of narrative-led games are still waiting with bated breath for one specific project: Star Wars Eclipse. The game, which was revealed all the way back in December 2021, comes from Heavy Rain and Detroit Become Human developer Quantic Dream, best known for its high-fidelity, choice-driven titles.

Following its visually arresting reveal trailer, Star Wars Eclipse has mostly flown off the radar. In fact, it’s been virtually absent from the games industry since this 2021 reveal, with not so much as a development update or release date announcement from either Quantic Dream or LucasFilm. If anything, news about Quantic Dream has been decidedly not Eclipse-related, as the studio just recently released the very off-brand Spellcasters Chronicles, a free-to-play MOBA in early access. Quantic Dream was also purchased by NetEase in August 2022, which has further fueled speculation about Star Wars Eclipse being in some sort of tumultuous development scenario.

Why Quantic Dream’s QTEs May Be Perfect for Star Wars Eclipse’s Gameplay

Star Wars Eclipse will be an ‘action-adventure’ game and yet how Quantic Dream approaches consequence-heavy QTEs need not be abandoned recklessly.

Star Wars Eclipse Is MIA, and Fans Are Getting Wary

With 2026 marking the fifth anniversary of the Star Wars Eclipse reveal, audiences are understandably impatient and concerned. Feelings of skepticism and disillusion with the project are nothing new, however, as we can observe such negative sentiments as early as 2024.

Take one popular Reddit post, posted on the Star Wars subreddit in commemoration of Eclipse’s announcement three years prior. Despite the post’s neutral tone, the comments below it are decidedly gloomy, with the top comment simply saying, “I’m not entirely sure this even exists.” Many other commenters concur, with some even predicting Eclipse‘s imminent cancelation; one commenter wrote, “I feel like the next time we’ll hear about it, it will be to announce it’s cancelled.”

A notable contingent of gamers have already begun likening Star Wars Eclipse to Star Wars: 1313, a game that LucasArts famously canceled in 2013.

Still, others have offered tepid support for the game. One popular comment points out that Quantic Dream revealed Detroit: Become Human a full six years before its eventual release, though this is actually incorrect: Quantic Dream released a tech demo called Kara six years before Become Human launched, the protagonist of which would be repurposed for the unrelated 2018 game. To clarify, the studio only announced Detroit: Become Human in 2015, three years before it was released.

Another common thread among this batch of comments, and within the Star Wars and Quantic Dream fanbases more broadly, is that Star Wars Eclipse’s delay has something to do with the 2022 NetEase acquisition. As one user put it, “There was likely a big delay after Quantic Dream got acquired by NetEase. Unless NetEase plans to use Quantic Dream as a mobile developer, we should see SW Eclipse in 2027 or 2028.”

This is an interesting theory, but it’s likely a bit too “inside baseball” to prove to any reasonable degree. What we seemingly can confirm is that Quantic Dream is in a period of change—its founder and CEO David Cage has indicated as much.

What Does Quantic Dream Have to Say About Star Wars Eclipse’s Development?

According to an October 2025 blog post by Cage, Quantic Dream is entering a “new chapter” defined by growth and ambition. The post highlights several changes at the studio, including its move to a Paris headquarters and a new office in Montreal, though he suggests that the greatest transformation came from the development of the aforementioned Spellcasters Chronicles, describing the process as “demanding” due to both the pedigree of the studio and the nature of the competitive multiplayer industry, saying that “since we have no legacy in this genre, we know we have everything to prove.”

However, he also says that Quantic Dream is no longer a “single-project studio,” indicating the ongoing development of something other than Spellcasters. This, of course, gives us reason to believe that the studio is still working on Star Wars Eclipse, and that this dual-development process may actually be what is slowing down progress. The continued existence of Eclipse is later confirmed by Cage in the same post, albeit only briefly: “Of course, development of Star Wars: Eclipse continues, and we are eager to share more with you in the future.”

Those familiar with David Cage’s controversial history may be slow to trust the man’s claims, but it seems implausible that he would outright confirm Eclipse’s ongoing development if the game’s future were uncertain. Then again, it’s so vague and cursory an acknowledgment that it doesn’t do much to assuage concerns. Perhaps if Cage had shed more light on where in the development process the game is, it would have inspired more confidence. Naturally, a game in the conceptualization phase is probably more likely to get the axe than a game deep into development.

At any rate, Quantic Dream’s Spellcasters Chronicles has since been released, and while we can expect the studio to continue funneling resources into the live-service for some time, it’s also possible that it will be able to shift its focus back to Star Wars Eclipse. Perhaps we will get more signs of life soon.
