The Sims 4 Gets New Hotfix Update, But It’s Causing Some Problems

The Sims 4 Gets New Hotfix Update, But It’s Causing Some Problems

A new hotfix update is available for The Sims 4, but many players report that it’s causing more problems than it’s fixing. The Sims 4 has a history of compatibility issues between its wide array of expansions, and while this update was intended to help relieve those incompatibility woes, it’s locking some players out of the game entirely.

The Sims 4 has been around for well over 11 years, and developer Maxis has done its part to keep gameplay fresh throughout that tenure with a regularly released mix of free updates and paid DLC. There are now close to 100 different officially licensed DLCs for The Sims 4, which come in a variety of sizes, from full expansions to packs of new furniture and clothing items. But these DLCs don’t always work well when they’re all running at the same time, which is a challenge that the development team has had to face more and more as the years have gone by.

The Sims 4 is giving away a free kit, and this guide tells players how to claim it.

The Sims 4 Hotfix Breaks the Game

A new update was released on March 18 with the goal of making DLCs and player-created custom content in The Sims 4 more compatible with one another, but it has had a game-breaking side effect for some players. Several fans of the game on Reddit have reported that after installing the new hotfix update, they’ve been met with hub screens that are either partially or entirely blacked out, not displaying their last-played households or other game information, as the screen should show under normal circumstances. Individual experiences with this bug have been inconsistent, causing problems for players to varying degrees. Some report that they’re still able to click the resume button and start the game normally, noticing no issues with the actual gameplay, while others say their screen is appearing as a completely black box, with no buttons to press to even reach the actual game.

The reason this bug is not affecting all players in the same way is still unknown. Many observers have assumed that players seeing more severe effects are playing the Sims 4 with mods installed, since mods did not come from the development team and have had a history of causing problems in the game, especially following a new update. One player commented that they had experienced black screen issues, then they uninstalled a UI mod and noticed that the problem had gone away. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for all players, as some are reporting that they’re still experiencing hub screen issues even with a completely empty mods folder or with all their mods disabled. The official patch notes state that some mods and custom content might need to be updated before they will work properly.

While the hotfix is causing some pretty disappointing issues for players, Maxis has been battling against DLC and custom content problems for several years. One of the most severe ongoing problems is The Sims 4‘s For Rent DLC save file corruption bug, which has been around since December 2023. While the full expansion introduced original concepts like living in apartments and managing properties, it has also plagued many players despite EA and Maxis’ best attempts to thwart it through multiple patches, sometimes costing players years’ worth of save data.

For players who are still experiencing issues with expansion and custom content compatibility once the black screen issue has been cleared up, Maxis has included a special feature that will let them manage their owned packs. A Sims 4 update from August 2025 introduced the Pack Selector, a special feature that lets players set up different neighborhoods that only grant access to content from the packs they choose. This feature not only cuts down on potential incompatibility issues by locking out unselected content, but it also provides a customizable gameplay experience for different save files.

Official Sims 4 Patch Notes for March 18, 2025

PC: 1.122.212.1030 / Mac: 1.122.212.1230

Sul Sul, Simmers!

Here is a small but important fix to custom content that was affected yesterday. All CC should now load and behave as expected. Thank you for your patience as this was sorted out.

– The Sims 4 Team

  • Resolved an issue where pack-specific custom content would not fully load and triggered other CC to not load as well.

Note from The Sims Direct: Some mods and custom content might still be incompatible and need to be updated to run properly in-game. Please be patient as custom content creators and modders work to resolve errors that might occur.

The update is around 144MB on Mac.
