A new update was released on March 18 with the goal of making DLCs and player-created custom content in The Sims 4 more compatible with one another, but it has had a game-breaking side effect for some players. Several fans of the game on Reddit have reported that after installing the new hotfix update, they’ve been met with hub screens that are either partially or entirely blacked out, not displaying their last-played households or other game information, as the screen should show under normal circumstances. Individual experiences with this bug have been inconsistent, causing problems for players to varying degrees. Some report that they’re still able to click the resume button and start the game normally, noticing no issues with the actual gameplay, while others say their screen is appearing as a completely black box, with no buttons to press to even reach the actual game.

The reason this bug is not affecting all players in the same way is still unknown. Many observers have assumed that players seeing more severe effects are playing the Sims 4 with mods installed, since mods did not come from the development team and have had a history of causing problems in the game, especially following a new update. One player commented that they had experienced black screen issues, then they uninstalled a UI mod and noticed that the problem had gone away. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for all players, as some are reporting that they’re still experiencing hub screen issues even with a completely empty mods folder or with all their mods disabled.
