The Walking Dead to Get New Free-to-Play Game This Summer

The Walking Dead to Get New Free-to-Play Game This Summer

The Walking Dead franchise is set to receive a new free-to-play game called Aftermath, marking the series’ first roguelite entry. Since the show’s debut in 2010, The Walking Dead has seen numerous video game adaptations, including several mobile titles. Still, it appears the IP holders see room for more entries in the franchise.

Aftermath is being developed by Ares Interactive, the studio behind the fast-paced roguelite game Heroes Vs. Hordes, which has surpassed five million downloads on the Google Play Store. According to the studio, the team is using that experience to deliver similarly high-intensity, replayable gameplay in The Walking Dead: Aftermath.

The Walking Dead: Aftermath Is the First Roguelite Game in the Series

AMC and Ares Interactive revealed that their joint project, officially titled The Walking Dead: Aftermath, is set to launch on the App Store and Google Play in summer 2026. It marks the franchise’s first free-to-play roguelite game, and while details on its core gameplay are still limited, the focus appears to be on survival and base-building. “Players will step into the shoes of iconic survivors from The Walking Dead universe,” the developer says, adding that “campaign missions take players through familiar locations from the television series, including Hershel’s Farm, Woodbury, Alexandria, and more.”

In The Walking Dead: Aftermath, players gather resources, upgrade their characters, and improve their base while preparing to face stronger hordes and larger bosses. This may sound similar to another Walking Dead mobile game, Survivors, where players build teams and expand their camps by collecting supplies. However, the key difference is that Aftermath follows a roguelite approach to combat, while Survivors leans more toward strategy and decision-making.

One notable detail about Aftermath is its commitment to the original story of The Walking Dead show. The game’s current description on Google Play states that players will begin as Rick Grimes, the protagonist of AMC’s hit series, likely following his journey after waking up from a coma. However, it remains unclear how closely the rest of the campaign missions will mirror the show’s events.

More details about The Walking Dead: Aftermath, including gameplay, characters, and feature reveals, are expected in the coming weeks. As for its release, no exact date has been confirmed, though the game is slated to arrive on mobile devices in summer 2026, with more platforms to follow. Based on its Google Play Store listing, however, Aftermath appears to be soft-launched in select regions, as it already has over 5,000 downloads.
