A brand-new DLC expansion is coming to The Witcher 3 in 2027, but a significant number of players won’t be able to play it. CD Projekt Red announced the Songs of the Past DLC for The Witcher 3 will release next year, 12 years after the game originally launched on the PS4, PC, and Xbox One. However, early console adopters of the game risk being unable to play this new DLC without upgrading their hardware.

The announcement of a new DLC for an almost 12-year-old game is something of a surprise, especially considering that CD Projekt Red is actively developing the game’s sequel, The Witcher 4, which is also rumored to launch in 2027. It’s not clear yet if the Songs of the Past DLC will bridge the gap between The Witcher 3 and its sequel, which is set to star Ciri as the main protagonist over the series’ longtime lead Geralt. However, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Geralt will still be the star of this Witcher 3 DLC.

The Witcher 4’s Open World Just Got Some Good News

The Witcher 4 developer is expanding on its open-world gameplay, and the latest news on that front is extremely positive for the upcoming RPG.

The Witcher 3’s New DLC Won’t Be Available for PS4 and Xbox One Players

Despite launching on the PS4 and Xbox One consoles back in 2015, The Witcher 3‘s Songs of the Past DLC is skipping the previous generation’s consoles and is currently only slated for launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This unfortunate decision means that fans who play the game on their last-gen consoles are unable to access the new DLC without purchasing new hardware. If there’s any consolation, at least the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions released back in 2022 offer a free upgrade for owners of the last-gen version of the game.

While CD Projekt Red hasn’t stated why the DLC is current-gen exclusive, the company has said that more information on the expansion will be shared in late summer 2026. It’s possible that the DLC is too large for the previous generation of hardware to handle, though the game has already received two major expansions.

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Hearts of Stone — October 2015
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine — May 2016

These expansions are both available on the original PS4 and Xbox One platforms that the base Witcher 3 game launched on, making the exclusion of Songs of the Past on these consoles all the more confusing.

By skipping PS4 and Xbox One releases, CD Projekt Red is potentially losing out on sales from the millions of players who have purchased the game on those platforms. As of May 2025, The Witcher 3 has sold over 60 million copies, with a platform breakdown of around 10 million on PlayStation 4 and4 million on Xbox One. The Witcher 3 was also ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2019 and sold around 700,000 units on the console, but Switch players will also miss out on this new DLC.
