The Wolf Among Us Remastered Review

The Wolf Among Us Remastered Review

For many fans, Telltale Games’ The Wolf Among Us is the best episodic, choice-driven narrative game ever produced by the company. That’s not to say it didn’t have some technical or gameplay issues, but it quickly became a cult classic, with many fans eager to see a sequel ever since The Wolf Among Us Episode 5 came to an end. Currently, The Wolf Among Us 2 is set to release in 2027, and The Wolf Among Us Remastered acts as a new herald for its arrival.

As many fans know, everything Telltale was disrupted when the company shuttered its doors in 2018 (the initial release year for The Wolf Among Us 2). Not only was The Wolf Among Us 2 canceled, but The Walking Dead: The Final Season struggled to make it to the finish line, needing Skybound Entertainment to step in and help Telltale conclude the protagonist Clementine’s journey. Clementine received her “happily ever after,” but The Wolf Among Us 2 was lost to The Witching Well—that is, until a reborn Telltale Games announced The Wolf Among Us 2 at The Game Awards 2019.

The road to The Wolf Among Us 2 has clearly not gotten any easier, as it will have been roughly eight years since its second announcement when the game finally releases, but The Wolf Among Us Remastered feels like an important milestone to that release. It’s a victory lap ahead of an even bigger challenge. The good news is that The Wolf Among Us Remastered is a solid remaster of a great game, with improvements throughout, and it’s a more convenient option ahead of TWAU2 in 2027.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered is a Convenient Remaster

For those who may be unfamiliar with the original, The Wolf Among Us serves as a prequel and adaptation of Bill Willingham’s Fables comic book series. It puts players into the shoes of Bigby Wolf, once known as the Big Bad Wolf in the fairy tales of yore. Now the sheriff of Fabletown—a district of New York City where Fables live disguised with glamours—Wolf investigates the death of a Fable and gets pulled into a conspiracy of government corruption, organized crime, and the various struggles of Fable citizens. Gameplay-wise, the genre has certainly evolved since The Wolf Among Us first released in 2013, but not in this remaster, so fans can expect to walk around key locations, interact with items to develop the story, conduct some light detective work, and ultimately make decisions about who Bigby Wolf is and the fate of Fabletown.

Of course, the hardest decisions in The Wolf Among Us do not have any clear outcomes. Some are resolved in the game, but some would clearly influence what happens in the next game. The Wolf Among Us Remastered is convenient in that regard, as many die-hard fans may not exactly remember their choices or how they played Bigby Wolf, and this remaster gives them that opportunity to play it again in the best form.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered Mostly Improves the Original Game

The Wolf Among Us Remastered does not touch the original story, nor does it really mess with the gameplay. The key thing to keep in mind is that The Wolf Among Us Remastered is a painted-up, graphical remaster, not an extensive remake. In that regard, The Wolf Among Us looks better and more detailed than ever. The development team intentionally kept everything in line with the original art style, but added more details to make it feel more like a 2026 Telltale game, not a 2013 one. Players will notice new lighting, new small details, and a lot of other micro-improvements throughout the game.

Perhaps the biggest area of improvement is the enhanced character models and animations. In fact, everything looks sharper and moves more smoothly, including improvements to Bigby Wolf’s werewolf form and the other Fable characters in The Wolf Among Us. Nerissa is another noteworthy recurring character who looks better than ever. Even the transitions between scenes are smoother, removing some of the rough edges from the original. Improved lip-syncing for the various Wolf Among Us characters also goes a long way toward making each scene feel more immersive, and all in all, there’s no doubt that the nuts and bolts were hit hard by the development team.

That said, there are a few drawbacks to the remaster. The Wolf Among Us Remastered’s load times can feel a little long. There are certainly games from the early PS4/Xbox One generation that take longer to load, but it shows its true age there, as every load screen goes on noticeably longer than it really should in 2026. Similarly, The Wolf Among Us puts convenience before improvement in some cases. Many criticisms of the original Wolf Among Us still stand: the gameplay is still incredibly simple, the pacing is still a little off-putting, and consequences could’ve carried a little further. Perhaps that is beyond the scope of its development, but it’s much closer to the original 2013 game than perhaps what fans hope for from The Wolf Among Us 2 next year.

For better or worse, The Wolf Among Us Remastered is also aimed at the most diehard fans (outside the convenient timing of its release). The bonus content makes this clear: a unique Noir Mode, behind-the-scenes interviews about the original and the remaster’s development, five playable deleted scenes (which are novel and fun, but not revolutionary—there is a reason they were cut from the original Wolf Among Us, after all), and a cool art gallery. Their inclusion will be a draw for some fans, but not all fans.

Overall, The Wolf Among Us Remastered is a good remaster of a great game, and it’s as simple as that. It falls into some of the same trappings as the 2013 title, and in some ways, it might skew closer to the 2013 game than the fan expectations for the 2027 title. To some degree, that’s to be expected. But what’s clear for anyone wanting to replay TWAU is that this is the definitive and best way to play it now and ahead of The Wolf Among Us 2 in 2027.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered releases October 29 for PC, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch version is still in development. GameRant was provided an Xbox Series X/S code for the purposes of this review.
