The “Worst” Assassin’s Creed Game Just Got a Much-Needed New Update

The “Worst” Assassin’s Creed Game Just Got a Much-Needed New Update

Assassin’s Creed Unity, which is often considered one of the worst entries in the series, has just received a new, much-needed update that unlocks 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Assassin’s Creed Unity was first released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC all the way back in 2014, receiving mixed reviews from both players and critics. These days, however, it appears to be looked back on much more highly, as Steam reviews have the game rated at “mostly positive.”

The 12-year-old Assassin’s Creed title is just the latest Ubisoft game to receive a surprise 60 FPS update, joining the likes of Far Cry 4, Far Cry New Dawn, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and many more. With Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed being two of Ubisoft’s most popular and beloved franchises, both of which often receive new installments every few years, it’s no surprise that the studio is attempting to keep players engaged with both series by making older titles more appealing to play on current-gen consoles. Ubisoft has also been working to bring many of its games to Steam over the last few years, as well as adding achievements to some of its most beloved titles on the platform, including Watch Dogs, The Division, and numerous Tom Clancy games.

5 Times Assassin’s Creed Broke Its Own Rules

Certain staples of the Assassin’s Creed series are set in stone, but these entries dared to challenge even franchise constants to offer something new.

Assassin’s Creed Unity Gets 60 FPS Update

Earlier this week, Ubisoft surprised fans by revealing tons of details regarding the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As part of the series’ roadmap, the studio confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Unity will receive a new update that will unlock 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The patch is available to download right now on current-gen consoles, and for those who haven’t purchased Assassin’s Creed Unity, it will soon be playable for free for a limited time on Xbox as part of the console’s Free Play Days event. From April 2 to 6, Unity and numerous other Assassin’s Creed games will be completely free-to-play on Xbox One and Series X/S. There’s also a Free Play Days event ongoing right now, between March 5 and 8, which includes Black Ops 7, FBC: Firebreak, and more.

During its future plans roadmap, Ubisoft also gave fans an update on the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Hexe. The studio acknowledged the secrecy around the title, but said it is being built with “great care” by a veteran team at Ubisoft Montreal. Ubisoft said fans can expect a unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history. The bad news is that the studio said it will be quiet for a little longer, as it works to deliver on its ambitious vision for the project, but noted that more information will be revealed when the time is right.

After years of speculation and leaks, Ubisoft also finally acknowledged the long-awaited remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. As expected, the title of the remake is Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, but the studio didn’t divulge any further details. Instead, it poked fun at the many rumors that have circulated about the title, saying that speculation around the Assassin’s Creed franchise is not new, but that it’s worth repeating: “Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.” It then noted how some rumors “have a little more wind in their sails,” before telling fans to keep their spyglasses on the horizon, which hopefully means more news is coming soon.

There’s a lot to be excited about if you’re an Assassin’s Creed fan, but these announcements come during a very turbulent time at the publisher, as Ubisoft is undergoing some major restructuring right now. The iconic studio recently canceled six projects that were in development, with one of them being the highly-anticipated Prince of Persia Remake. While Beyond Good and Evil 2, which seems to be in development hell, is still reportedly safe, leaks suggest that two Assassin’s Creed games were canned, alongside numerous other projects.
