The legacy of Chrono Trigger lives on with upcoming game Nocturne, but this particular RPG also throws some fun rhythm-based mechanics into the core gameplay loop. Nocturne is bringing forth a blend that isn’t really common in the world of RPGs. On the one hand, it has the staple elements that have become signature features of the genre, but on the other hand, it adds some serious Guitar Hero vibes to combat.

There was once a time when the industry was experimenting a lot with rhythm games. The Guitar Hero games are some of the most notable, but other titles, like PaRappa the Rapper and Geometry Dash, have also been fun takes on the genre. Though rhythm games have fallen out of style in recent years, Nocturne‘s rhythm-focused RPG formula proves that this kind of gameplay can still be great in unexpected genre crossovers. Chrono Trigger and Guitar Hero aren’t really two games that are mentioned in the same breath, but Nocturne is looking to change that.

Summer Games Week: Highlighting 2026’s Biggest Summer Releases

GameRant’s Summer Games Week highlights the games that could make this season a lot more interesting than players might expect.

Nocturne Embraces Chrono Trigger’s Thought-Provoking Storytelling and RPG Structure

Even over 30 years later, Chrono Trigger is considered by many to be one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Its time travel storyline and fantastic gameplay have made it a deeply influential RPG, and Nocturne has clearly taken notes. Nocturne‘s story may not be centered around time travel, but it has its own compelling setting. The story takes place in a digital afterlife that has been lying dormant for a thousand years. Now, the world has woken up, and it takes players on a journey that raises deep questions about the meaning of life and sacrifice.

This premise makes it a great game for RPG lovers who were particularly touched by Chrono Trigger‘s story and its shocking mid-game twist. Sacrifice is a big theme in Chrono Trigger, and Nocturne‘s afterlife setting is bound to shine a spotlight on plenty of concepts that are just as heavy to think about.

Gamers who are looking for a well-crafted RPG narrative should know that Nocturne‘s story features over 100,000 words and has a campaign that’s over 10 hours long.

Chrono Trigger was one of the first games to show how deep storytelling can be in games, and naturally, Nocturne is far from the only game it has inspired through the years. Games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and I Am Setsuna also have Chrono Trigger to thank. Nocturne boasts classic RPG features like leveling, items and equipment, stats, and plenty of exploration that leads to compelling in-game secrets. That isn’t the only thing that Nocturne has in common with Chrono Trigger, though.

Fans of Chrono Trigger’s Soundtrack Need to Put Nocturne On Their Wish Lists

The music in Chrono Trigger makes it one of the best soundtracks in gaming. Since Nocturne is a rhythm-based game, it’s no surprise that there is a great soundtrack to help bring this to life. What makes the soundtrack extra compelling, though, is that all the boss music was recorded live by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra. It’s a special touch that brings Nocturne‘s world to the next level.

Nocturne‘s original soundtrack features a whopping 101 songs that gamers can play. These tracks can be played in the game’s Arcade Mode.

Even Newcomers to Rhythm Mechanics Can Enjoy Nocturne’s Boss Fights

Rhythm games can feel daunting for some gamers; mechanics that require fast reaction times aren’t exactly for everyone, but that shouldn’t keep RPG fans from giving Nocturne a look. The game features six different difficulty levels that range from Easy all to the way Expert, so it’s a really forgiving game when it comes to the rhythm combat. Nocturne‘s approach to the mechanic has the potential to make it one of the best rhythm games of the past few years. Whether one prefers a more fast-paced rhythm showdown or needs to go a little slower, taking down bosses in Nocturne is meant to feel satisfying no matter what.

These Rhythm Mechanics Are a Reminder That This Flavor of Gameplay Still Has So Much Potential

When they’re done well, rhythm controls can be an incredibly underrated mechanic to use as a main gameplay feature. It requires players to bring their full attention to what’s happening, which can make the experience that much more immersive. There are plenty of great immersive games out there that don’t have rhythm mechanics, but adding these controls to the mix offers a change of pace from the gameplay styles that are more common in the industry.

Nocturne Could Be a Great Way to Close Out the Summer and Welcome the Fall

Unless the game faces an unexpected setback, Nocturne is scheduled to launch on September 24. This puts it right around the transition between the summer and fall seasons, which drops it in the middle of a rough position when it comes to the 2026 game calendar. Nocturne clearly has the ingredients to be a charming indie game, but it will have to go up against a lot of major titles that are coming out around the same time.

Chrono Trigger and Guitar Hero aren’t really two games that are mentioned in the same breath, but Nocturne is looking to change that.

Right now, Nocturne is only coming out on PC via Steam. It remains to be seen if it will eventually get a console release.

Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Silent Hill: Townfall, Valor Mortis, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword are just a few of the games coming out September 2026. That’s a packed space to be in, so Nocturne can hopefully shine through and find its audience. Thankfully, having such an unorthodox approach to the RPG genre could really work in Nocturne‘s favor once September rolls around. There really isn’t another Chrono Trigger-inspired RPG out there that features rhythm mechanics as its core boss battle gameplay. It’s going to be interesting to see how Nocturne fares at launch, but it’s definitely a game worth keeping an eye on. Those who are interested in the game but want to have a little appetizer first can play a free Nocturne demo on Steam.
