Toby Fox Gives Yet Another Update on Deltarune Chapter 5

Toby Fox, creator of episodic RPG Deltarune, has issued a new update on the progress of the game’s fifth chapter, showing significant progress as the newest installment is quickly approaching its official testing phase. Chapter 5 of Deltarune is probably going to arrive sometime in the second half of 2026, and the update from Fox is being received as a positive sign by the fan community.

A follow-up to his massive hit Undertale, Deltarune shares many similarities with the older RPG, including bullet hell-based combat and charming worlds full of quirky characters, and their names are even anagrams of one another. While not reaching the height of Undertale‘s impact on the indie RPG scene, Deltarune has still managed to attract tons of players, with close to 62,000 user reviews on Steam alone, and an overall player rating of 98 percent.

Deltarune: Hidden Things You May Have Missed In Chapter 3

With such a fast-paced chapter, it’s easy to miss some of the more obscure things hidden about the Dark World. Here are just a few.

Deltarune Chapter 5 Enters Testing Soon

In a new string of posts on his official Twitter account, Fox reported that professional testing of Deltarune Chapter 5 is scheduled to start on April 1. While that is the formal date for testing to begin, the testers have already got their hands on the Chapter 5 content and are familiarizing themselves with it. That information is the latest in a trend of good news for fans of the game after a slight delay, as Fox had previously predicted that Deltarune Chapter 5 would be arriving in early 2026 before pushing the release window back to later in the year.

The professional testers are familiarizing themselves with the game now. They begin formally testing on April 1st. Japanese translation quality assurance is projected to be completed in April. Outside of addressing bugs and translation, most of the development team has moved on from Chapter 5.

It’s still unclear exactly how long testing is going to take. Fox was transparent with the information, as well as listing off some of the steps the latest chapter will have to go through before it reaches players. Deltarune is available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and PC, and once testing on the latest chapter has been completed, he will have to get it approved for inclusion on all those platforms. The fifth chapter has also been undergoing translation into Japanese since the early part of this year, and that localization work is expected to wrap up some time during April. Considering that there was a nearly four-year gap between Deltarune‘s Chapter 2 release on PC in 2021 and the combined, multi-platform release of chapters 3 and 4 in June 2025, fans of the game have gotten used to long waits, but the ramped-up development schedule should prevent such long lapses as the game nears its planned completion with its seventh chapter.

As an additional thread in the string of good news, the majority of the development team has already moved on from its work with the fifth chapter and is currently working on installments that will be added later. This level of progress also follows a pattern that was predicted in a Deltarune update from January, which stated that developers would be moving on to Chapter 6 in the months ahead. With the fifth chapter still awaiting release, it’s hard to predict when the final two planned chapters will become available, though fans should not expect to see Deltarune Chapter 6 until 2027 at the absolute earliest.

The exact date Fox mentioned in his posts has some fans slightly concerned about what the next developer update will entail and how reliable its information will be. The April 1 start date for testing has some fans anticipating an April Fool’s Day prank may be brewing, so Delatarune enthusiasts should make sure to check the dates of any future posts reporting information about Chapter 5. Additionally, Fox’s comment that this latest post would be his last update on the subject of Deltarune “for a while” indicates that fans may have a long time to wait until they get another check-in from the creator.
