Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched in the spring of 2025, and the game is now coming to an official end a little over a year after its debut. Today marks the final post-launch update for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily sad news. The team behind AC Shadows has packed this one last update with a lot of content worth celebrating.

The final AC Shadows update brings players a new story chapter, a huge endgame mode called Domains, and even some content that ties into AC Black Flag Resynced. Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois recently revealed all the details that are to be expected from the update, and there is a lot to unpack. Even though AC Shadows‘ final update marks the end of an era, the newest entry in the series is at least closing things out with a bang.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Update is Hiding an AC Black Flag Remake Teaser

Assassin’s Creed fans unite to uncover a new Black Flag remake tease hidden away in AC Shadows’ latest update.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Adds a New Story Chapter Called “Black Tides”

Naoe and Yasuke’s journey isn’t quite over yet. The protagonists are going to come face-to-face with two mysterious Templars known as the Black Cross. This mysterious duo has specifically traveled all the way to Japan to hunt down Naoe and Yasuke. AC Shadows‘ protagonists have faced plenty of challenges along the way, but the arrival of the Black Cross may be one of their most intriguing obstacles yet. Black Tides will serve as the game’s “true” ending, so players who want to experience the full story will definitely want to check out this new update.

  • In order to unlock Black Tides, players will have to complete the past two free story updates.
  • Players do not have to own the Claws of Awaji DLC in order to unlock Black Tides.

Calling this final story mission Black Tides also feels like it’s more than a coincidence. With the Black Flag Resynced release date on the horizon, there could be some slight connections to the remake. That isn’t the only detail in the Black Tides trailer that feels like it’s teasing a connection to other Assassin’s Creed games. There is a brief moment that also shows a statue of AC Odyssey‘s Kassandra. It’s possible that these are simply fun tributes to other series entries, but the only way to know for sure is to play Black Tides and find out if there is more to the story.

Domains Brings a Robust New Endgame Activity for Players to Spend Hours With

A new AC Shadows story mission is exciting enough, but that is simply the tip of the iceberg with this update. Domains is being dubbed an “Animus-bending activity” that is all about challenging players and their RPG skills. The new Domains mode features five distinct arenas and features 10 different difficulty settings, meaning there is a lot of variety for players to experience with this new addition. Domains also requires players to really think about what modifiers they are using. Just because one loadout works in a certain arena doesn’t mean that it will also succeed in a different arena.

Every Domain Arena

  • Megalith
  • Whiteout
  • Broken Sky
  • Shipbreaker
  • Red Moon

Each Domains level has its own distinct vibe and biome that aims to make every level feel unique. From Whiteout’s snow-covered level to Broken Sky’s mind-bending design, Domains is an endgame addition that sounds like a great option for the most hardcore AC Shadows players. AC Shadows‘ post-launch content hasn’t always hit the mark. The game’s controversial limited-time Attack on Titan crossover was a low point, but Black Tides and Domains sound like the type of content that plenty of fans will be interested in checking out.

AC Shadows‘ Domains features its very own merchant that allows players to purchase gear sets, weapons, and more with the mode’s in-game currency. There is also a new progression tree specific to Domains.

Domains and Two New Projects Introduce Exclusive Gear

Those who are particularly excited about the return of Edward Kenway in Black Flag Resynced will probably want to take a look at the new Projects coming to AC Shadows. There are some special cosmetics that are directly inspired by Black Flag Resynced. Naoe and Yasuke can get their very own pirate-inspired outfits, but what’s even better is that these Projects are valid across AC Shadows and Black Flag Resynced. This means that certain Japan-based gear can be imported into Black Flag Resynced when it launches.

As the Sun Sets on AC Shadows, Black Flag Resynced is Appearing on the Horizon

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for AC Shadows. The dual protagonist approach didn’t click with some players, and the story and content have been divisive. AC Shadows‘ new update has the chance to end the game on a more positive note, though. This entry may not have been one of the most perfect Assassin’s Creed games, but it was still an interesting new road for the series to go down. The game boasted plenty of strong points, and this new update is a solid way to close out this particular chapter.

Black Flag Resynced is Next in Line

Since it’s considered one of the best games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, there are high expectations surrounding this Black Flag remake. The project has been rumored for a really long time, and Ubisoft finally confirming its existence back in April was a huge moment. Black Flag being brought back in a fresh light is thrilling, but it’s also a little bit nerve-wracking. Doing such a beloved game justice is no easy feat, so it will be fascinating to see what the player feedback is when the remake arrives.

The wait is finally almost over. There have been intriguing sneak peeks at Black Flag Resynced‘s gameplay, and it looks promising. A few weeks still stand between Assassin’s Creed fans and the release, though. Thankfully, the AC Shadows update means that there isn’t a lack of Assassin’s Creed content to revel in ahead of Black Flag Resynced. Between the Black Tides story expansion, Domains’ Shipbreaker level, and the pirate-inspired cosmetics, AC Shadows‘ update could be a fun appetizer.
