Crystal Dynamics, the team behind the Tomb Raider franchise, has confirmed another wave of staff reductions, marking a difficult period for the studio. This latest move follows a series of similar announcements over the last 12 months, creating a sense of uncertainty for those following the studio’s progress. While the news is certainly a blow to the workforce, the company claims it is trying to position itself for a more stable future. According to various reports, the studio is currently navigating a very busy schedule with multiple high-profile Tomb Raider projects in the pipeline that remain the primary focus of the remaining staff.
The history of the studio has been turbulent over the last few years, especially following its transition to new ownership. Crystal Dynamics was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022, a move that initially involved about 273 employees across offices in San Mateo, Austin, and Bellevue. However, the honeymoon phase didn’t last long, as the studio has been hit by a relentless cycle of downsizing. Before this latest announcement, the team endured 10 job cuts in 2023, followed by three separate rounds of layoffs in 2025. Specifically, 17 people were let go in March, an undisclosed number were cut in August, and another 30 workers lost their jobs in November. This means at least 67 developers have been forced out within a single year, highlighting a volatile environment for those working at the veteran developer.
Amazon Addresses Future of Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider Project
Despite the recent wave of layoffs, Amazon shares an encouraging update on its upcoming Tomb Raider game project with Crystal Dynamics.
Studio Restructuring Leads to Further Team Reductions
The current round of layoffs specifically impacts 20 people who worked in various roles at the company. Per a statement shared on LinkedIn, the cuts are split between members of the creative development teams and those working in central operations. The studio explained that these departures became necessary as their current games move into “new phases of development,” requiring a rethink of how their teams are structured. Crystal Dynamics stated that it always try to move employees into different roles when possible, but it eventually reached a point where it could no longer avoid these cuts. To help those affected, the company mentioned it is offering severance packages and job placement assistance to help talented developers find their next role in the industry.
Beyond the games themselves, the studio is operating within a complex web of corporate partnerships and media expansions. Both upcoming Tomb Raider titles are being published by Amazon Game Studios, a company that has recently faced its own struggles with project cancellations and internal cuts. There is also a major live-action television series in development for Prime Video, which is currently filming in England with Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner stepping into the lead role of Lara Croft. Crystal Dynamics had also been helping with the reboot of Perfect Dark for Xbox, but that project was eventually scrapped, which likely contributed to the studio needing to “optimize” its staffing levels. The developer remains adamant that these external pressures will not stop them from finishing their work on the Lara Croft series.
Despite the shrinking workforce, the studio is still moving full steam ahead with its plans for the iconic treasure hunter. The team is currently hard at work on the two major interactive experiences that aim to redefine the series. The first is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a complete remake of the original 1996 adventure, designed to bring the beginning of Lara’s journey to a modern audience. The second project is a brand-new sequel titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst which is expected to take the story in a fresh direction. Interestingly, these games will feature a new voice for the protagonist, as Alix Wilton Regan has been cast to replace Camilla Luddington, who voiced Lara throughout the previous “Survivor” trilogy. Both titles were officially revealed to the public during The Game Awards this past December.
While the studio continues to offer reassurances, the frequent loss of staff has raised questions about the health of the development process. It’s difficult to see how losing so many colleagues wouldn’t impact those left behind, regardless of the studio’s claims that projects are “unaffected.” “Optimizing” a team by putting more work on fewer people is a difficult pill for many to swallow, especially when the staff has seen their friends and coworkers leave in four different waves. Crystal Dynamics acknowledged that this kind of news creates worry within the gaming community, but it insists its priority is supporting those who are leaving while staying dedicated to their goals. With Legacy of Atlantis scheduled to arrive later in 2026, fans will soon see if the studio can deliver on its promises despite the internal chaos.
