Twitch Issues Apology After Hitting Streamer With 30-Day Ban

Twitch Issues Apology After Hitting Streamer With 30-Day Ban

Twitch has issued an official apology to streamer SmaK after swiftly imposing the content creator a 30-day ban over a comment made during a livestream. The Twitch suspension elicited significant confusion not only from SmaK, but from other prominent creators on the platform.

As one of the biggest online streaming platforms, Twitch has not been afraid to bring down the ban hammer. The Amazon-owned platform’s moderation includes multiple tiers of punishments for users committing different infractions, ranging from chat restrictions to full-on account bans for its most serious violations. Even Twitch’s top creators are not safe from being suspended, including popular content creator ExtraEmily being banned after her distracted driving nearly caused an accident on-stream. Now, one Twitch creator was banned from the platform and almost immediately reinstated after the company recognized its error.

Twitch is introducing new features that can be used to restrict several features from accounts, including blocking streams and messages.

Twitch Apologizes, Unbans Streamer After Wrongful 30-Day Ban

Twitch streamer SmaK was hit with a month-long ban from the platform on July 30 for comments made during a livestream. SmaK referred to wanting to “go away for a long time” after reading a particularly odd message from a chatter, feeling that he couldn’t properly process the things he was hearing and reading. The unexpected suspension was confirmed to be an automatic, system-generated ban, with Twitch taking similar actions against streamers who have expressed thoughts of self-harm on-stream. SmaK revealed that he quickly received an official apology the following day, and he was unbanned from Twitch shortly after.

The immediate ban received attention from some of the platform’s larger content creators. Popular Twitch streamer Nickmercs shared his own thoughts on SmaK’s ban, expressing his shock about SmaK being suspended over a seemingly innocuous comment while interacting with chat. Many fans were surprised that the comment led to a suspension at all, comparing the joking comment favorably to more severe actions that previously resulted in far shorter bans for some of Twitch’s bigger streamers. SmaK noted after the suspension was lifted that the apology was unexpected, claiming he says worse things regularly while playing video games on-stream.

SmaK’s speedy ban was likely falsely flagged by an automated system on Twitch that monitors the mental health of streamers. Multiple streamers have claimed in the past to have been banned from the platform for similar comments, with the system automatically ending their streams and issuing suspensions. The platform’s policies on suspensions have been a point of contention among some of its biggest creators as well, including Asmongold suggesting that only breaking the law on-stream should result in Twitch bans.

While Twitch’s ban policy has been controversial for many fans, the site has worked to improve its stance on suspensions. Twitch fully overhauled its ban and suspension policy in early 2026, creating separate categories for chat-based bans and streaming bans. The new policy allows users who receive chat-based restrictions to still stream, while users banned only from streaming can still use chat, with more serious violations preventing both chatting and livestreaming. Twitch’s new changes aim to make the platform a safer place for both viewers and streamers.
