Twitch Streamer CaseOh Shares His Resident Evil Hot Take

Twitch Streamer CaseOh Shares His Resident Evil Hot Take

Case Dylan Baker, better known by his Twitch handle CaseOh, has argued that nearly every Resident Evil game has a part that “sucks” to the point it discourages people from replaying it. While some fans characterized this opinion as a hot take, the Twitch star’s comments also drew widespread agreement, as well as plenty of examples that illustrate his point.

CaseOh rose to prominence with NBA 2K23 clips on TikTok in late 2022, leveraging that to boost his then-modest Twitch channel. Three and a half years later, he has over 8.2 million followers on the Amazon-owned platform and regularly streams a wide variety of content, including horror games.

Resident Evil Requiem Steam Version Is 18% Off in This Unique Deal

The Steam version of the newly released Resident Evil Requiem can already be picked up at an 18% discount as part of an ongoing deal.

CaseOh Argues Most Resident Evil Games Have at Least One Terrible Section

During a recent stream, CaseOh posited that the majority of Resident Evil games have at least one section that discourages repeated playthroughs because it “sucks so bad.” He backed that claim by citing several examples, including the sewer part of Resident Evil 2 and the island section of Resident Evil 4.

Though CaseOh initially said he could name every example to support his claim, his monologue appeared aimed as much at entertaining as informing, leading him to describe the entirety of Resident Evil 3 as so annoying that he would not revisit it. While he articulated a similar sentiment about Resident Evil 7, he described that game as “awesome,” all the while insisting he never wanted to play it again. CaseOh acknowledged that there are exceptions to his rule of thumb, notably Resident Evil 5, which he considers free of particularly “egregious” sections and therefore conducive to being replayed.

For Resident Evil 6, the streamer asserted that low-quality sections are present throughout the entire 2012 title. This particular claim is consistent with the widespread fan perception that Resident Evil 6 is among the worst series entries. CaseOh’s monologue glossed over several mainline games, including Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 1, and the recently released Resident Evil Requiem.

The social media reactions to CaseOh’s comments lean toward agreeing with the streamer. While some fans described his opinion as a hot take and insisted that they find most series entries to be of consistently high quality, many others offered additional examples substantiating his claim. Among them are the character interludes featuring Sherry Birkin and Ada Wong from Resident Evil 2, which are often seen as replay friction due to how much they interrupt the core gameplay loop by virtue of being significantly more scripted than the rest of the game. The castle section of Resident Evil 4 also appears to have annoyed a significant number of players, much like the shipwreck chapter in Resident Evil 7. Ditto for the House Beneviento and Heisenberg’s Factory levels in Resident Evil 8.

Will Resident Evil Requiem Have Parts That Fans Dread on Future Playthroughs?

Time will tell where Resident Evil Requiem falls on this spectrum. Given how much its two protagonists differ in terms of playstyle, it is likely that a significant number of fans will find some sections more engaging—or annoying—than others. Grace’s segments, for the most part, play out like a typical survival horror experience, with a fragile character and a tight resource management loop. While things do get easier after unlocking some upgrades, the game still encourages using stealth whenever possible when controlling her. Meanwhile, Leon plays like a force of nature who can quickly mow through even some of the game’s biggest threats and is generally much less squishy. On several occasions throughout Resident Evil Requiem, Grace is essentially locked up with zombies, but when it comes to playing as Leon, it can more often be said that zombies are locked up with him.
