Ubisoft is Remaking Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag

Ubisoft is Remaking Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag

Ubisoft has just confirmed that the long-rumored Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake is real, and that its official title is indeed Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. This confirmation comes as just one small part of a much larger update Ubisoft has issued regarding the current state of the Assassin’s Creed franchise as a whole in 2026.

Rumors of an Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake first surfaced all the way back in June 2023, with Kotaku claiming that Ubisoft had officially greenlit a ground-up remake of the beloved 2013 entry. Around a year later, Insider Gaming reported that the Black Flag remake had been in full development since September 2023, but in a follow-up report in October of the same year, Insider Gaming claimed that the remake had been pushed back due to Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ delay. Rumors of an Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake really started heating up in December 2025, with an ESRB listing suggesting the game could be called Black Flag Resynced, and Insider Gaming claiming that it could arrive as early as March 2026. Unfortunately, it seems those plans have been dashed in the wake of the recent major Ubisoft restructurings.

Assassin’s Creed Franchise Gets New Leadership Team

Ubisoft has just appointed three new leaders to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, all of whom have worked on the series for quite some time.

But while Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced likely won’t be out this month, fans are one big step closer to finally getting their hands on the long-awaited remake. In an official March 4 update on the current state of the Assassin’s Creed franchise titled “Assassin’s Creed: Into 2026,” Ubisoft finally confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is real. This official confirmation came in the simple form of a piece of concept artwork showing protagonist Edward Kenway standing atop a ship’s mast, with the official title being revealed in the bottom right of the frame.

However, while fans now have official confirmation that the remake is in development, no concrete details were given about Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced‘s release window or any potential changes to the original’s gameplay, story, or art style. The image was simply accompanied by this line of text:

“Speculation around Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it’s worth repeating: “Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.” Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon.

Ubisoft Gives Updates on The Future of The Assassin’s Creed Franchise

The bulk of Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed: Into 2026” report is spent giving updates on other upcoming Assassin’s Creed projects. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is officially entering its final phase of support. Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe is described as a “unique, darker, narrative-driven” experience, and the new Assassin’s Creed Head of Content, Jean Guesdon, confirms that he’s taken over directing the game following Clint Hocking’s departure from Ubisoft last week.

Assassin’s Creed: Codename Invictus is finally given an official description in this recent report, with Ubisoft confirming it’s a “PvP multiplayer Assassin’s Creed experience led by a dedicated team of For Honor veterans at Ubisoft Montreal.” Interestingly, this update definitively states that Invictus is a new approach to multiplayer for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, but that it “isn’t quite what the rumors have suggested,” likely referring to the 2024 leaks that claimed it was aiming to imitate Fall Guys.

Assassin’s Creed Jade is briefly mentioned, with Ubisoft simply stating that it’s still in development. The return of Assassin’s Creed co-op is also apparently being worked on. Finally, Ubisoft teases that the upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed Netflix show will be revealed soon, and a 60 FPS update is confirmed to be coming to Assassin’s Creed Unity on March 5, 2026.
