Ubisoft Is Shutting Down One of Its Most Overlooked Games in October

A Ubisoft game called Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is set to be sunset soon after a rough start and problematic performance since 2024. Ubisoft has had its share of game shutdowns in the past, but few fans seem to be grieving the end of support for Champions Tactics for several understandable reasons.

One of Ubisoft’s most devastating moves was abandoning The Crew in 2024, which led to the Stop Killing Games movement. However, Champions Tactics seems to be the reverse story.

Ubisoft Says 2026 Will Be Light on Major Releases Outside Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft confirms a quieter 2026 release schedule after Black Flag Resynced, while teasing that several major franchises are still on the way.

Champions Tactics Will No Longer Exist

Ubisoft quietly launched Champions Tactics in 2024 as one of its first NFT-centric games. The idea was to create a game where players could earn real-world money through its mintable characters. Fast-forward to 2026, and Ubisoft is preparing to sunset Champions Tactics on October 30. Previously, the company tried to save the game by removing the NFT aspects and even launched another free-to-play version on Steam called Champions Tactics Reforged. However, neither attempt could entice players to pick it up.

Champions Tactics Reforged was released on May 19, 2026, but is no longer available on Steam.

One of the biggest problems with Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles was said to be its performance issues. Even those who had no issues with its Web3 aspects were unable to enjoy the gameplay due to bugs and glitches. There was also a very unfortunate incident in the first few months after the game’s release that affected its reputation. A single player was able to make Champions Tactics unplayable for everyone else, and it took Ubisoft a long time to address the problem.

Ubisoft’s Champions Tactics was designed to play like a strategic turn-based PvP game. Players would collect different heroes or purchase them from the NFT marketplace to assemble teams and battle others. Some heroes were reportedly even listed for over $50,000 on the marketplace, which shows how exaggerated its financial targets used to be. Of course, since Champions Tactics never took off, it is unlikely that any major transactions took place on its servers before its NFT aspects were removed.

The list of games Ubisoft has shut down is not short. However, Champions Tactics might experience the smoothest end-of-support process, as there seem to be very few fans upset about its sunset. Normally, when a game announces plans to go dark, gamers try to stop the publisher, and sometimes they even sign petitions to delay the process. But none of that is likely to be the case with Ubisoft’s former NFT game.

So far, 2026 hasn’t been a good year for the company in terms of maintaining its IPs and studios. In June 2026, Ubisoft shut down at least two of its studios that were reportedly working on several new games. The company has also hit many other studios with layoffs, even among teams that found success with their recent releases. It remains to be seen if more unfortunate decisions like these will take place in Ubisoft’s near future, as the gaming industry is not exactly in the best shape at the moment.
