Gameplay footage from a canceled Iron Man video game has leaked online. Many of Marvel’s most popular heroes have gotten their own dedicated games over the years, but characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men have received the majority of the focus from developers and publishers. Despite finding huge success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man has had few starring roles in video games throughout the character’s more than 60-year history.
An Iron Man video game is in development by EA Motive, but the game has received few updates since its initial announcement. In 2025, the publisher canceled plans for a Black Panther game, but EA has since confirmed that Iron Man remains in active development. The game will be a single-player, third-person action-adventure.
Long before EA Motive’s Iron Man began development, Avalanche Studios was working with Marvel on a game featuring the armored Avenger. Best known as the developer behind the Just Cause franchise, Avalanche Studios could have been a strong candidate to tackle one of Marvel’s most popular heroes. Unfortunately, the project was canceled in 2014, before it was even announced to the public. More than a decade later, some gameplay footage has leaked on Reddit, offering a glimpse at how the project was coming along.

The footage is early, but it offers an interesting look at how Avalanche Studios was planning to bring Iron Man to life in the game. The developers were clearly taking inspiration from the MCU Iron Man movies, with the JARVIS AI serving as an assistant to the player. Footage includes Iron Man fighting enemies both in the air and on the ground, and one segment shows the hero taking fire from an enemy plane. Given these threats, it’s somewhat unsurprising that the suit can be seen heavily damaged at various points throughout the footage. It also seems there would have been segments where players controlled Tony Stark without the armor.
Prior to this canceled game, Sega released Iron Man video game adaptations based on the first two movies. Those games were poorly received, but it seems like Avalanche Studios might have been on the right track with the character. Iron Man has yet to receive a truly great video game the way that Spider-Man and Batman have, which is surprising given how popular the character has become for Marvel. Not all heroes lend themselves well to video games, but Iron Man’s supporting cast, villains, and abilities would seem like a strong fit for the medium.
It remains to be seen whether EA Motive’s Iron Man will be able to take off from the launch pad, but Marvel fans should have plenty of other options while they wait. For one thing, Iron Man appears as a playable character in games like Marvel Rivals, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and Marvel Cosmic Invasion. There are also several Marvel games in active development, including Wolverine and 1943: Rise of Hydra.
