Unofficial Hogwarts Legacy Azkaban Expansion Brings the Harry Potter Books to Life

PC gamers are certainly not shy about modding anything and everything when it comes to massive role-playing games, and Hogwarts Legacy has notably been one of the biggest titles to receive major mods that expand on the base game. One of the most recent mods to catch the attention of Harry Potter fans has been the Azkaban expansion mod for the PC version of Hogwarts Legacy, which finally sees players facing consequences for using any of the three Unforgivable Curses. In fact, that mod has become so popular that many Potterheads are now left once again lamenting the lack of an official expansion to Hogwarts Legacy that would truly bring the novel series to life.

When Hogwarts Legacy first launched, it was widely praised for its impressive visuals, powerful spell variety, and inclusion of activities revolving around fantastic beasts and magical plants. However, one of the most prominent gripes among critics and audiences has been the complete lack of a morality system in Hogwarts Legacy. Many have complained that the notorious Unforgivable Curses can be used willy-nilly with absolutely zero punishment or even judgment from the game’s NPCs, leaving many unhappy with the obvious break in gaming immersion and major diversion from the heavy darkness surrounding the use of these spells in the books. Luckily for PC players, a Hogwarts Legacy modder has introduced Azkaban and Aurors into the game, forcing fans to think twice before using an Unforgivable Curse.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 will Feature Branching Narratives

Hogwarts Legacy 2 seems to be moving in a different direction with its storytelling, with branching narratives as the narrative focus.

Azkaban Mod Finally Gives Hogwarts Legacy Book-Accurate Morality

Nexus Mods user nathdev has created an impressive Azkaban expansion mod for Hogwarts Legacy that finally introduces a much more book-accurate version of the world of Harry Potter. With the mod, anytime a player uses one of the Unforgivable Curses in front of a civilian, they are immediately reported to the Ministry of Magic, and Aurors are sent to arrest the player and send them off to Azkaban. Similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, players are given a warning that their spell has been reported and the “authorities are coming,” forcing the player to escape, fight, or be imprisoned for their crimes. Normally, only Hufflepuff students are given a quest that allows them to visit Azkaban in Hogwarts Legacy, though that is an investigative trip and not a full lock-up.

For Potter fans who want an authentic Death Eater experience, nathdev’s Azkaban mod is the perfect opportunity to test out the darker side of the Wizarding World, though many are understandably disappointed that this unofficial gameplay expansion is only available to PC gamers. Fans have been keeping their fingers crossed for any major upate from developer Portkey Games that would allow players across all platforms to enjoy Azkaban, Quidditch, and other potential new features, but there has sadly been very little in the way of true expansions since the game’s release. While hints at possible gameplay changes for Hogwarts Legacy 2 have kept fans interested, others have grown weary of the lack of fresh content for the first game, and many have voiced dissatisfaction with relying on community mods that are limited to a single platform.

Dementors in Azkaban Prison Hogwarts Legacy

One of the larger concerns among players is that Portkey Games may be focusing entirely on the confirmed Hogwarts Legacy 2 development, which some feel leaves the current game without enough ongoing support. The over 10,000 unique downloads of the Azkaban mod are arguably proof positive that any official story or gameplay additions to Hogwarts Legacy would be well-received, though there is presently no way of knowing if any big updates will actually come.
