The 2025 movie Until Dawn may have secretly teased Until Dawn 2 a full year before Sony officially announced the game at the recent State of Play, and fans are only now putting the pieces together. While it’s a loose connection, given how largely disconnected the movie is from the Until Dawn game, it’s still interesting to see Until Dawn 2 teased there.
As fans know, the Until Dawn movie plot is drastically different from the first game. The Until Dawn movie follows a group of friends searching for answers about a missing loved one who then become trapped in a deadly time loop, while the game explores a supernatural + slasher story about 8 friends who reunite on a remote mountain lodge. Ironically, the movie is like a time loop game, and the game is like a slasher film. Now, fans have noticed Until Dawn 2 is teased in the movie—despite it being removed from both the first game.

Until Dawn 2 Teaser
Until Dawn 2 is set on the deserted tropical island of Akishima, as the new characters run the paranormal YouTube channel Dead True, where they post staged ghost hunter content. Everything naturally goes wrong in Until Dawn 2, where the job turns into a fight for survival, as they face the horrors and atrocities on the island, as well as internal strife. A lot of details are unknown, but the movie directly references Akishima Island.

In the Until Dawn scene above, there is a newspaper mentioning a massacre on the island. At the time, viewers largely overlooked it because there was no reason to believe the location had any larger significance. It’s just a newspaper after all. The headline reads “Targedy Strikes Tropical Paradise” with the excerpt stating: “Multiple deaths lead to hotel closure on island in the West Pacific.” This has naturally led to some debate around the Until Dawn timeline.
Some see this as the movie taking place after Until Dawn 2, assuming the “canon ending” is the group dying, but others suggest that, more likely, the massacre is one of the reasons Akishima Island is closed in the first place for Dead True. While that is more likely, on the assumption that the Until Dawn movie is canon, it’s more likely a simple Easter Egg with no regard for “canon.” In all likelihood, as Until Dawn 2 was in development at the time, Sony decided to include a slight reference to the next game for moments exactly like this: hype.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that Sony is pretty much the only real connection between the movie and the games. Until Dawn was made by Dark Pictures developer Supermassive Games and published by Sony, the Until Dawn movie is out of Sony’s movie efforts, and Until Dawn 2 is being developed by Firesprite—a company acquired by Sony in 2021. As such, any connection will be slim, but there’s no harm in a good Easter egg/tease.
