Without a doubt, unlocking a new ability in a Metroidvania is one of the most satisfying feelings because it usually means that you’ve unlocked a previously inaccessible area. Getting access to a permanent upgrade doesn’t immediately solve all of your problems, but it definitely gives you more freedom to move around, and games like Hollow Knight have pretty much perfected this formula. However, the upcoming Nocturnal 2 seems determined to put an interesting twist on that established formula.

Just like Hollow Knight, it allows players to unlock new abilities to access new areas, but it makes things considerably more complicated by requiring players to keep their sword burning to overcome some of the obstacles and activate certain mechanisms. In other words, having unlocked the right ability may not always be enough to move further into the world of Nocturnal 2.

Nocturnal 2’s Fire Mechanic Raises the Stakes in Combat

Many people consider exploration to be one of the best features in Metroidvanias, generally because of the enormous interconnected worlds, but it’s important to note that combat is often just as important. Nocturnal 2 seems to be very aware of this fact, as it features fast-paced aerial combat and juggling mechanics, which definitely give players more variety when choosing how to attack different enemies. For example, players who usually prefer an aggressive playstyle might have to hold back a little more than usual when facing enemies capable of extinguishing their sword.

Sure, this will depend on how punishing losing the flame actually is and generally how likely enemies are to damage it, but in any case, adapting one’s approach could be an exciting opportunity to develop new skills. However, when it comes to combat, it’s also extremely important for enemies to fight back well enough to keep players challenged and entertained. In the case of Nocturnal 2, according to the developers, enemies can actually extinguish the flame on the protagonist’s sword, which makes fighting a little more complicated than it may initially seem. So not only will players be required to focus on defeating their opponents, but they also have to pay attention to the state of their weapon. So this new addition is extremely important not in one but in two areas of Nocturnal 2.

Earlier Areas Could Remain Challenging Much Longer

One of the biggest advantages of permanent upgrades is that players can go back to areas that previously challenged them and manage to navigate them perfectly fine. And although this is quite satisfying, the potential downside is that earlier areas may lose their challenge altogether, so a big part of the game actually becomes trivial. Nocturnal 2 avoids this problem by making the difficulty of certain areas less dependent on how far players have progressed through the game, thanks to its fire mechanic, which requires them to keep their sword burning.

Nocturnal 2 is scheduled to launch on November 10, 2026

This may have some serious consequences for how players experience backtracking, and it could preserve some of the original challenge even at much later stages of the game. Of course, there’s a fine line between having interesting exploration challenges and making the entire experience unnecessarily frustrating, but with the right balance, this approach has the potential to make revisiting familiar areas even more rewarding than usual.

Nocturnal 2’s Fire Mechanic Could Be a Double-Edged Sword

Of course, not every player is going to appreciate Nocturnal 2‘s approach to exploration, especially those who prefer having complete freedom after unlocking their abilities. On one hand, it is nice to have an additional challenge here and there, but if one’s progress is constantly getting interrupted by a mechanic, the experience could quickly become frustrating. Generally, there are a lot of people who simply want to explore at their own pace without having to worry about any other restrictions. On the other hand, this could appeal to those who enjoy experimenting with different mechanics, and one particularly interesting possibility is that this new approach could encourage players to pay closer attention to environmental details because they constantly interact with the burning sword.

However, this feature’s success will probably depend a lot on how clearly the game communicates these interactions as well, and whether the mechanic is consistent enough for people to properly learn what’s expected of them. In any case, this isn’t the first time a game has experimented with a similar mechanic, as the original Nocturnal already allowed players to use a flaming sword to activate mechanisms, but the new release will give it a much bigger role. Moreover, it would be interesting to see how this new feature could affect the game’s accessibility. There is a huge possibility that less experienced Metroidvania players will struggle to keep up, considering that these games already require a good amount of patience. Whether this approach will be successful or not remains to be seen.
