WARDOGS Is Already Facing the ARC Raiders Problem Every Breakout Live-Service FPS Eventually Meets

The more, the merrier—or so they say. WARDOGS has acquired a huge audience since the release of its Early Access version on September 10, 2026, and what’s even more impressive—it sold over 1 million copies on day one and 2 million copies within the first week. WARDOGS‘ level of success draws a comparison to ARC Raiders, which exploded in popularity just as suddenly and unexpectedly, only to discover that this deal comes with a problem—a player base so big causes a demand for new content so massive that it’s almost impossible to keep up with.

Having too many players is definitely a dream come true for many, but what they often miscalculate is that this can quickly become too difficult to manage, as WARDOGS is now finding out. The truth is that when the demand for new content jumps higher than expected, many players have the potential to lose interest and move on to a different game in the blink of an eye. Whether this risk is worth it depends on the individual studio’s judgment. However, most times, trying to keep every player as a solution might actually deepen the problem even further instead of fixing it. In any case, looking at the studio’s latest statements, it seems like the developers are aware of the limitations they are facing and have already established their priorities for the future. While many players would prefer to get more content now, others agree that WARDOGS has other issues to address, and it’s best for the team to focus on delivering a great game with the official full launch.

WARDOGS: Best Medic Loadouts

A good medic can turn the tide of war and push their faction towards victory by reviving their downed teammates. Here’s the ultimate WARDOGS Medic.

WARDOGS Was Not Built for an Audience This Big

Recently, Bulkhead’s CEO and WARDOGS executive director Joe Brammer came out with a statement, as reported by GamesRadar+, saying that the studio did not anticipate such a big player base. In fact, although he admitted he was happy with the game’s success, he couldn’t deny that the studio would have considered the Early Access launch successful by having fewer players as well. Now, as the audience rapidly grew, the expectations followed the same trajectory. Players are thirstier than ever to see new maps, weapons, and modes—anything that would keep the game fresh. However, producing so much content is way more difficult than playing it, and Bulkhead is definitely aware of it.

Joe Brammer openly admitted that the studio will most certainly not be able to provide the content people want; the demand surrounding WARDOGS is simply way too high. However, he also stated that this is partly because the team is now working hard to deliver the best possible version of what was originally most important—the game’s full 1.0 release. It seems like Bulkhead has fully accepted that it simply cannot please everyone and will have to pick its battles. Brammer did not forget to mention that a fluctuation of the player base is fully expected, and he’s willing to let some players go rather than shift the studio’s attention toward the wrong problem and risk compromising the 1.0 release, losing all players as a result.

WARDOGS Might Actually Be Learning From ARC Raiders’ Mistakes

It seems like Bulkhead might be trying to avoid some of the mistakes its fellow studios have already made. Back in 2025, Embark Studios released ARC Raiders, which grew its audience at a rapid pace, reaching over 700,000 concurrent players in just one week after its launch. The massive growth was unexpected, just like with WARDOGS. This left the studio dealing with player expectations that grew by the thousands overnight. However, their approach to the issue of high demand was exactly the opposite of what Bulkhead is doing right now. The developers quickly noticed the increased pressure for more content and decided to try and give people what they wanted.

Producing so much content is way more difficult than playing it, and Bulkhead is definitely aware of it.

Embark was suddenly aiming to add new content to ARC Raiders every single month to get as many existing players to stay as possible. Unfortunately, there’s no way to operate at full speed forever, and at this scale, even larger development teams would have struggled to keep up. Just a few months later, the studio admitted defeat and stated that this pace was not only impossible to sustain, but it also might have been doing more damage rather than helping the initial situation. During this period, player complaints had increased, the updates lacked depth, and what’s even worse, there was a suspicious drop in the number of concurrent players right at the same time.

Considering all of this, Embark Studios immediately switched to a different strategy—lowering the amount of updates in ARC Raiders so they could focus on quality, instead of quantity. This same strategy is now employed by Bulkhead without having to go through the trial and error that their colleagues had to endure with ARC Raiders. And although there’s no evidence that this strategy has improved the game’s long-term performance, it seems like it definitely gave the studio some breathing room. Moreover, even if it didn’t bring back all the lost players, it definitely wasn’t making matters worse, which in this situation is a win in itself.

Trying to Please Everyone Could Cost WARDOGS Its Best Qualities

Attempting to satisfy everyone’s requests is an undertaking that never goes well, both when it comes to video games and real life. In this case, as of September 29, 2026, WARDOGS has over 200,000 concurrent players on Steam. Although not each one of them shares their opinions on the Internet, a large portion of them do, and on this scale, this is a substantial number of people. Naturally, pleasing one group will always dissatisfy another, but what’s even worse is that the game could easily lose the exact qualities that made it great in the first place. This concern is especially important when it comes to major gameplay changes that are often part of most Reddit discussions on these matters.

Thankfully, Bulkhead recognizes the risk of altering the game too drastically enough to address it properly. Joe Brammar spoke about it in an interview with Insider Gaming earlier this year, stating that the studio has a very particular vision for WARDOGS that is unlikely to change because someone shared a negative opinion. Even Mark Pinney commented on the matter, adding that the studio will stick to their official plans no matter what, because this approach has turned into an entire philosophy at this point.

Maybe WARDOGS Just Needs The Right Players

There’s no doubt that WARDOGS is currently one of the hottest releases out there, but it’s important to raise the question of whom all these players actually are. Yes, there are plenty of people who know exactly why they are playing the game—they enjoy the genre and were actively waiting for the game ahead of its release. However, it’s reasonable to assume that there’s a large portion of players who are part of these huge numbers for completely different reasons; they just follow the hype, want to join their friends, or are simply curious and want to give it a shot. Of course, these are perfectly reasonable motivations, but that doesn’t mean everyone enjoys this type of game enough to play it for months and years.

Naturally, this brings us to the conclusion that losing a portion of the current player base may not even need to be treated as a problem. Some of the players we’re seeing now were probably not going to stick around anyway, regardless of whether Bulkhead added their desired content or not. There’s plenty of evidence suggesting that a smaller player base isn’t necessarily an issue, with research reported by GameSpot arguing that live-service games benefit a lot more from managing to keep a smaller but stable group of players long-term than from having a huge launch.

WARDOGS Could Only Do So Much to Prepare for Its Success

Looking at the situation from the outside, it’s easy to criticize and imagine all the possible what ifs, could haves, and would haves. However, when it comes to video game launches, it’s pretty difficult to predict exactly how big the audience will be. Well, maybe unless you’re GTA 6, in which case you could definitely assume huge numbers. And even then, making a prediction would be a gamble. In any case, the current situation is not necessarily a result of bad planning, because WARDOGS was intended for a smaller audience anyway, and any number above what was expected was simply a bonus. Of course, Bulkhead could have prepared for a bigger launch just in case, but there’s also no guarantee that putting in more effort will bring so many players.

What remains to be seen, though, is whether Bulkhead’s decision would pay off after the official release of WARDOGS 1.0. However, the studio might have to even exceed player expectations to prove that the team’s full attention having gone to the full release was worth it. Of course, we shouldn’t forget that WARDOGS also has a planned console launch, which will bring an entirely new audience, so the growth opportunities are nowhere near over. And the good news is that the studio is now aware of how much attention WARDOGS can actually attract, given the right circumstances. This gives the studio a better idea of what they can expect at launch, allowing them to set clear goals.
