Call of Duty: Warzone will soon become unplayable for those on last-gen consoles. With the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 next month and its first seasonal content drop, Call of Duty: Warzone will stop functioning for PS4 and Xbox One players.
Released in March 2020, Call of Duty: Warzone has undergone more than its fair share of changes since its debut. Along with a mobile spinoff and an upgraded 2.0 version, Call of Duty: Warzone has experienced a plethora of major content updates, many of which have coincided with the launch of a new mainline Call of Duty entry. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, MW2, MW3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 have all been integrated into Warzone‘s ever-evolving design, each one bringing new mechanics, new weapons, and at least one new map to the battle royale game. With Modern Warfare 4 on the horizon, Call of Duty: Warzone is getting ready for yet another major content drop, but this time millions of players are being left behind.

The announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 back in May came alongside the sad news that Call of Duty: Warzone would soon be shutting down its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One servers. On June 4 of this year, Warzone became unavailable to download on the PS4 and Xbox One stores, but those who already owned the multiplayer game have been allowed to keep playing. Then, on June 25, Warzone‘s in-game store closed down for those on PS4 and Xbox One, though they could still earn free rewards from the game’s Battle Pass.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to release on October 23, and Season 1 will begin “shortly after,” according to Activision’s latest statements. This first season will see Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 content come to Call of Duty: Warzone, and will officially mark the end of support for Warzone on last-gen consoles. This means that PS4 and Xbox One owners have just one more month to play Call of Duty: Warzone.
Those looking to upgrade to a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S before or after the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be able to carry over their account progression to the current-gen version of Call of Duty: Warzone just as long as they sign in to the same Activision account. Some content purchased with CoD Points will also carry over, but any points left on the account will only be carried over if the user upgrades to a current-gen console that’s in the same family. For instance, CoD Points left on a PS4 account will only carry over to a PS5 account, not an Xbox Series X/S one.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s upcoming integration into Call of Duty: Warzone is bringing some major changes to the battle royale. A full reset is expected, meaning that Warzone‘s current arsenal will be replaced entirely by Modern Warfare 4 weapons and that seasonal progression will be wiped. At least one new map is also expected to appear in Warzone in the coming months, with MW4 Beta players already getting an early glimpse of the ‘Zodiac’ Resurgence map a few weeks ago.
