Way of the Sword Gets Encouraging Update

A known gaming industry insider said that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is still slated to arrive in 2026, despite Capcom’s reluctance to reveal a precise release date so far. The insider added that Capcom has a few upcoming chances to finally tell its audience when Onimusha: Way of the Sword will reach store shelves.

In short, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an action title set in a dark version of Japan’s Edo period. As a samurai called Miyamoto Musashi, players are tasked with defeating monsters throughout Kyoto. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will offer challenging boss battles that will require mastering Musashi’s use of weapons, including a katana and a spear. Additionally, Musashi can use a powerful artifact called the Oni Gauntlet to turn the tide of battle. This demonic gauntlet can absorb the souls of Musashi’s fallen foes, which in turn can be used to heal him or grant him access to more powerful abilities.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Is Still On Track For A 2026 Release

Although Capcom teased a release date announcement for Onimusha: Way of the Sword on social media, the developers have so far kept a tight lid on the exact details. However, gaming industry insider Nate the Hate said on Twitter that Onimusha: Way of the Sword was well on track to launch in 2026. Nate the Hate said that Capcom will have a few upcoming opportunities to show off the release date for the upcoming Onimusha title. One such chance could be during Summer Game Fest, which will have its flagship event on Friday, June 5, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. With Capcom using shows hosted by Geoff Keighley to reveal upcoming projects, such as the Okami sequel and Mega Man: Dual Override, it is possible that Onimusha: Way of the Sword‘s release date could be revealed during SGF.

However, Nate the Hate also said that Capcom could reveal Onimusha: Way of the Sword at other events that will be held around the same timeframe as Summer Game Fest. These events are the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 7, and the freshly-announced State of Play on Tuesday, June 2. Although PlayStation’s upcoming State of Play will be headlined by titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine, the hour-long presentation will likely have plenty of room for third-party games to reveal some key details. Ergo, Capcom will have three potential chances in early June to possibly show off when fans can get their hands on Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

As of this writing, Capcom has not officially released any further indication as to when Onimusha: Way of the Sword could be released. However, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will have its work cut out for it. Given that other major titles such as GTA 6 and Marvel’s Wolverine will launch throughout the second half of 2026, Capcom will still have some major releases to contend with.

Given that Capcom has sold millions of copies of Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem throughout the first half of 2026, the company is already well on track to have a successful year of game releases. It remains to be seen which date Capcom will choose to give Onimusha: Way of the Sword the best opportunity to shine on its own merit.
