Way of the Sword Teases Release Date Announcement

Way of the Sword Teases Release Date Announcement

Capcom has just teased the release date for its upcoming game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. First announced at The Game Awards in 2024, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first mainline entry in Capcom’s samurai-based action franchise since 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Since that game’s release 20 years ago, Capcom has only kept Onimusha fresh in gamers’ minds through a pair of remasters of the franchise’s first two entries, along with a virtual reality game, Onimusha VR: Shadow Team, in 2025.

Even though it appears to be a major evolution of the Resident Evil-inspired gameplay of the original releases, Onimusha: Way of the Sword should stand out among Soulslike and samurai titles that gamers have received plenty of in the past few years. Capcom is looking to distance the game from the modern wave of Soulslikes on the market by focusing less on difficulty while continuing to emphasize exciting sword fights and dark action-horror thrills. This new Onimusha game looks to bring the once-dormant franchise back to its former glory, while continuing the scorching-hot streak Capcom has been on in 2026.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release Date Teased Through Twitter “Hack”

The official Onimusha Twitter page has offered a tease about the release date of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, but stopped short of officially revealing it. The pair of tweets was written from the perspective of Diana, one of the two protagonists of the recent Capcom-developed smash hit Pragmata. These tweets give the impression that Diana “hacked” into some files and are part of a larger series of “hacks” of several official Capcom-based Twitter pages, with each featuring tweets from her perspective.

After a series of tweets showcasing gameplay screenshots from Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the final message sees Diana revealing that she found something in a file featuring a release date for the game. As she prepares to download the module featuring the date, however, Pragmata’s other protagonist, Hugh, tells her it’s time to go. Thus, Diana offers a goodbye to readers in Japanese, which she had mentioned learning in previous tweets.

Teasing the release date for the upcoming Onimusha game on Twitter appears to be a sign that an official announcement is coming soon. Capcom previously teased Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s release date back in March, revealing that the game was in the “final stages of development” after its appearance at the Capcom Spotlight event. With June marking the beginning of Summer Game Fest, an announcement may be on the way sometime in the next month, perhaps in another Capcom Spotlight showcase.

The decision to tease the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword using Diana from Pragmata also appears to be a fun way to cross-promote that game. Pragmata has already become a massive success for Capcom, receiving very positive reviews and selling a million copies in its first two days of release. The game company has already had a phenomenal year between Pragmata and Resident Evil: Requiem, so here’s hoping Onimusha: Way of the Sword continues the publisher’s dominance later this year.
