Warner Bros. Games has issued a statement on Hogwarts Legacy 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2023 open world action-RPG set in the Harry Potter universe. In the wake of Paramount acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, it’s been confirmed that Warner Bros. Games is being merged with Paramount Games Studio to create one giant gaming division. No name for this new gaming division has been announced at the time of this writing, but fans can expect it to focus on the biggest franchises under the Paramount and Warner Bros. (aka Skydance) umbrellas, which would include Harry Potter games like Hogwarts Legacy 2.
Hogwarts Legacy 2‘s existence was casually confirmed years ago by an executive, though no footage of the game has been revealed to date. While we don’t know for certain, it’s believed that development on Hogwarts Legacy 2 started shortly after the original game’s massive sales success that saw it become the best-selling game of 2023. It’s also been previously suggested that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel will be modeled after the upcoming Harry Potter TV series on HBO, suggesting it could be set during the same time as Harry’s adventures or will otherwise feature a redesigned castle for players to explore.
What WB Games Has Said About Hogwarts Legacy 2
But that’s just speculation at this time. The only thing we know for absolute certain when it comes to Hogwarts Legacy 2 is that the game is in development. This was re-confirmed in a letter to shareholders discussing WB’s games division. The letter touched on the successes of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, and explained that WB’s strategy will be focused on its four key $1 billion franchises moving forward. “We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands,” the statement reads, “including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.”
We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.
So now the question is, when will Hogwarts Legacy 2 be unveiled? There have been rumblings that a Hogwarts Legacy 2 reveal could be happening sooner rather than later, but fans should keep their expectations in check. The next big gaming event is The Game Awards on December 10, and that could be the perfect opportunity to pull the curtain back on the game. WB has made major announcements at The Game Awards in the past, and so it’s certainly possible. Then again, Hogwarts Legacy was infamously snubbed at The Game Awards back in 2023, so maybe its reveal will take place elsewhere.
Now that Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have become Skydance, it’s possible that some of the plans that the two gaming studios had will change. Projects could be canceled or delayed, but fans shouldn’t have to worry about Hogwarts Legacy 2 being impacted. As previously mentioned, the first Hogwarts Legacy was a massive commercial success, and so it wouldn’t make sense to scrap the sequel.
The four key franchises Warner Bros. called out in the letter are believed to be Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and DC Comics, so fans can expect more games based on those franchises in the future. As far as Paramount Games Studio goes, it released Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game earlier this year to mostly positive reviews, and it has Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, and a Star Wars game in development.
