Star Wars actor Sam Witwer, who voices Darth Maul in Disney+’s Maul – Shadow Lord, expressed that he wants to see a standalone Darth Maul game. The former Dark Lord of the Sith is in the spotlight again in the new Star Wars animated series, which will likely spark more discussion about the terrifying villain.
Beyond the Star Wars movies and shows, Darth Maul has also been featured in a number of video games. He’s one of the playable characters in Star Wars: Battlefront 2, where players can wield his iconic dual red lightsaber while fighting against foes. He is also a recurring character in all the LEGO Star Wars games, featuring as the boss villain in the Phantom Menace chapter. Fortnite even made a Darth Maul skin during a special Star Wars event back in 2023.

Star Wars Actor Sam Witwer Sees Potential in a Darth Maul Video Game
Despite Darth Maul’s popularity within the Star Wars fandom, the villain doesn’t have a standalone game yet. There was an attempt to make a Darth Maul game by Red Fly Studio over a decade ago, which had the working title Maul, but it was canceled after Lucasfilm was sold to Disney. But Sam Witwer, who is the lead actor in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, believes there’s an opportunity to “do an incredible story” with a game focusing on the villain. Speaking with Discussing Film, Witwer said he knows what to do with the character if a studio decides to greenlight the project.
Witwer is no stranger to the video game industry, as he’s worked on multiple Star Wars titles, voicing Starkiller and Emperor Palpatine in The Force Unleashed and The Force Unleashed 2; and Maul in Battlefront 2 and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. He has also lent his voice to massive titles such as The Callisto Protocol (Captain Leon Farris) and Horizon Forbidden West (Walter Londra). This is why many fans agreed with Witwer’s sentiment about hopefully working on a Darth Maul game in the future, adding that big studios like Electronic Arts (EA) or Ubisoft should consider developing it.
Red Fly Studio’s Dan Borth said during a Reddit AMA in 2015 that they were working on resurrecting the canceled Darth Maul game, mentioning that the team was looking to approach EA with a demo in hopes of getting it picked up. He also shared details about the gameplay, which was supposed to be a third-person story-driven game that followed a young Maul as he rose in the Sith hierarchy. Fans also got to see various Maul concept art that showcased Darth Maul in different costumes, along with different characters and one of the locations that players would explore. Fast-forward to now, Red Fly Studio has gone quiet about reviving Maul, leaving many fans disappointed yet still hopeful that Darth Maul would get his time in the video game spotlight soon.
