The fighting game scene is undergoing a bit of a renaissance at the moment. While fighting games have always been popular, the last 12 months have delivered some of the greatest fighting games of all time from most of the biggest franchises around, including Street Fighter, Tekken, and of course, Mortal Kombat. Amid those giants, MultiVersus has also just reappeared, having shut down its Beta in June 2023 and taking almost a year to iron out some kinks, add some new content, and get ready to come out of the gate swinging.
Unfortunately, MultiVersus‘ relaunch hasn’t quite gone to plan. By most accounts, MultiVersus‘ big comeback has been marred by severe technical problems, along with a myriad of issues related to the game’s new combat mechanics and its character-unlock system, which now sees fans unable to play as paid characters during local play. But with a few changes, MultiVersus could still be a great game, and eventually, a Mortal Kombat crossover could be on the cards.

A Mortal Kombat x MultiVersus Crossover Has a Lot of Potential
The Mortal Kombat 1 x MultiVersus Crossover Rumors Explained
All the way back in December 2021, MultiVersus‘ Game Director Tony Huynh took to Twitter to ask what two Mortal Kombat characters fans would want to see in the Warner Bros. crossover platform-fighter, prefacing that question with a careful “I’m definitely not saying it’s going to happen.” Then, almost a year later in October 2022, Mortal Kombat and NetherRealm Chief Creative Officer Ed Boon replied to a fan on Twitter who asked if a Mortal Kombat character could show up in MultiVersus, saying “That would be dangerous for me to answer.”
From that moment, theories surrounding a Mortal Kombat x MultiVersus collaboration have run rampant, and with MultiVersus having now returned, speculation is only growing louder by the day. Ed Boon continues to stoke the flames, having made several posts counting down the days to MultiVersus‘ launch, including one that teased fans for missing Mortal Kombat X‘s Friday the 13th crossover, saying that Jason is now playable in MultiVersus instead.
Currently, Warner Bros. owns the Mortal Kombat IP, along with NetherRealm Studios. With the company also owning MultiVersus, it does seem likely that a crossover between the two fighting games could be on the table at some point soon, especially with MultiVersus leaning more heavily into adult-oriented crossover characters recently.
What a Mortal Kombat x MultiVersus Crossover Could Look Like
The most obvious form a Mortal Kombat x MultiVersus crossover could take is one or two iconic MK characters joining the MultiVersus roster. The most obvious picks are probably Scorpion and Sub-Zero, with the two still being the most recognizable franchise mascots, though characters like Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Mileena, and Kitana would all be great options as well. This wouldn’t be the first time Mortal Kombat characters have been given a cartoony makeover either, as there have been several animated Mortal Kombat TV shows and movies over the years, with the best probably being 2020’s Mortal Kombat: Scorpion’s Revenge.
It seems pretty unlikely, but a Mortal Kombat x MultiVersus crossover could technically go both ways, where one or two characters from MultiVersus‘ roster could come to Mortal Kombat 1. The only original character on MultiVersus‘ roster is Reindog, who’s a bit too cute and cuddly to step into the gory world of Mortal Kombat, but crossover characters like Agent Smith, Stripe, and of course, Jason Vorhees would all fit Mortal Kombat well.
