Witcher 3 DLC Gameplay Reveal Shows Off Brutal New Weapon

Songs of the Past will be The Witcher 3‘s first new expansion in over a decade, and CD Projekt Red wants to send Geralt off with a bang. While we still don’t have a clear sense of what the expansion’s storyline will be, the first gameplay reveal for the upcoming DLC did show the titular monster slayer wielding a brutal new chain weapon to drag his foes toward him.

What game hasn’t been made better with a grappling hook? In Geralt’s case, it looks like this accessory might be purely reserved for snagging monsters and then dismembering them. This could completely change up my normal method of absurdly dodging and rolling my way toward bosses to close the distance. Here’s our first look at Songs of the Past in action, including the new weapon:

CDPR level design lead Miles Tost appeared on stage at Gamescom ONL to help tease out a few things in the new trailer. While it’s new to The Witcher 3, the weapon was previously first shown in the opening for the first Witcher game from back in 2007. The new content will take place in a region called Letten, which Tost described as being an idealistic land that hides a dark secret, one only Geralt can get to the bottom of, in part by killing lots of stuff.

Songs of the Past doesn’t have a set release date yet, though it’s supposed to arrive sometime in 2027. It’ll be Geralt’s last adventure before CDPR passes the baton to his mentee and surrogate daughter, Ciri, in The Witcher 4. The studio recently revealed that the sequel is set to arrive sometime in 2028. In the meantime, fans will have a free remaster upgrade of the base Witcher 3 coming this fall to sink their teeth into.
