World of Warcraft is adding the ability to customize where weapons are sheathed on character models via the Transmog system in Patch 12.0.5. Using this new feature, World of Warcraft fans can choose how their weapons are stored when not drawn for each outfit they set up.
The Midnight expansion completely overhauled the Transmog system in World of Warcraft. Rather than applying appearances to each individual item, players instead set up Outfits for characters that automatically change the look of any item equipped in their respective slots. The system also supports Situations that automatically adjust one’s transmog when entering certain locations or content, swapping to different specs, or even when taking certain shapeshifting forms.

Soon, World of Warcraft will be rolling out a new type of customization option into this updated system. As of the most recent build of the Patch 12.0.5 Public Test Realm, World of Warcraft has added the ability to choose whether weapons are sheathed on a character’s back, side, or if they’re completely hidden when not wielded. Dual-wielders can even set each weapon individually, meaning they can have a weapon stored on their back and side simultaneously. These settings can be applied to weapons on each Transmog outfit:

- Hidden While Sheathed

That said, there are a few limitations to this system so far. Two-handed weapons, including ranged weapons, cannot be stored on a character’s side; they can still only be sheathed on the back or hidden when not wielded, even for Fury Warriors in World of Warcraft. Likewise, certain one-handed weapons that are sheathed on the back by default cannot be set on the side, and Fist weapons, which are hidden by default, cannot have their sheathing placement adjusted at all. Oddly enough, Demon Hunters also cannot currently customize weapon sheathe placements – not even one-handed weapons that can be adjusted on other classes. This is possibly because of issues with the Demon Hunter-exclusive Warglaives, whose odd shapes make storing on sides difficult. It remains to be seen if this will be adjusted in further builds.
Either way, this is a huge improvement for the Transmog system. Before, all weapons had a default placement, with most one-handed weapons stored on the character’s side. This could sometimes cause clipping issues if players wore certain types of Transmogs. These options give them more control over what their characters look like both in and out of battle, and while the system isn’t perfect, it should be a massive win for customization enthusiasts in World of Warcraft.
What Else is Coming in WoW Patch 12.0.5?
Between Void Assaults, Ritual Sites, Decor Duels, Abyss Anglers, and the Voidforge, there’s plenty of content coming in World of Warcraft Patch 12.0.5. What’s more, Blizzard is introducing an official Pride celebration with the Darkspear Dash, which got its start as the Running of the Trolls, a community-led charity event.
As far as customization is concerned, there are several other options coming in this update as well. New Transmog Situations for Weather and Time of Day will allow fans to have special outfits for nighttime, rain, and more. Additionally, Demon Hunters in WoW get new blue and fireless eye customizations, while Void Elf Demon Hunters receive several new visor options that match their typical color schemes. Meanwhile, Dracthyr Evokers can use the new Battle Visage ability to automatically swap them back to their Visage form immediately after using a skill that requires their draconic form.
This upcoming update doesn’t currently have a launch date, but World of Warcraft’s past release cadence gives players a pretty good picture as to when it could arrive. Midnight was released on March 2, and there are about eight weeks between most WoW updates. Assuming it follows this pattern, World of Warcraft fans could see Patch 12.0.5 on or around April 28.
