World of Warcraft Could Be One Step Closer to Coming to Xbox

World of Warcraft Could Be One Step Closer to Coming to Xbox

After over two decades, World of Warcraft could finally be one step closer to making its long-awaited Xbox debut, with Blizzard offering encouraging comments about the MMORPG’s future beyond PC. The latest World of Warcraft development comes as the studio prepares to launch an ambitious new version of Azeroth that could change how players experience the franchise.

Originally released in 2004, World of Warcraft has spent more than 20 years as one of PC gaming’s most recognizable exclusives and cultural touchpoints. Despite its enormous popularity, Blizzard has never brought the MMORPG to consoles, even as competitors like Final Fantasy 14 have demonstrated that the genre can work well with a controller. That could eventually change with World of Warcraft: Forever, a new version of the game launching November 4 and built around the original Azeroth. Forever is set to combine classic gameplay with new content, modernized visuals, and several quality-of-life improvements; however, one particular addition could have implications well beyond the upcoming release.

World of Warcraft: Forever Is Quietly Bringing Back the Greatest Mistake of Classic WoW

World of Warcraft: Forever’s latest racial changes risk reviving Classic WoW’s worst habit: turning character creation into a min-maxing contest.

Speaking with GamesRadar, World of Warcraft executive producer Holly Longdale discussed how WoW: Forever‘s native controller support could eventually open the door to more platforms. “Play it wherever you want and, at some point, on whatever you want,” Longdale said, adding that getting gamepads to work properly is the first step toward that goal. She also pointed to Project Helix, Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware, as an example of how the boundaries between platforms could become less distinct in the future. Longdale also highlighted how players are already experimenting with World of Warcraft on devices like the ROG Xbox Ally X, adding that Blizzard’s controller support could offer flexibility that “goes beyond consoles.” Although Longdale stopped short of confirming an Xbox release, her comments suggest that the studio is finally taking the possibility of playing World of Warcraft on other devices seriously.

Making that happen would require overcoming the game’s controls, which is likely one of the biggest challenges of bringing World of Warcraft to consoles. The MMORPG was designed around keyboards and mice, with dozens of abilities, inventory shortcuts, and interface elements that aren’t necessarily easy to manage using a gamepad. Community-made solutions like ConsolePort have offered controller support for years, but Forever marks Blizzard’s first attempt at providing a comprehensive native experience. Early beta feedback has been encouraging, with players praising the convenience of controllers while requesting broader improvements to button customization, targeting, and inventory management systems.

Speculation about an Xbox release has persisted since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard in 2023, but ownership alone hasn’t been enough to bring WoW to consoles yet. However, Project Helix could change the equation considerably. Microsoft has confirmed that its next-generation hardware is designed to run both Xbox console and PC games, potentially lowering the traditional barriers between the two platforms. Granted, that doesn’t necessarily mean World of Warcraft will automatically work on the new Xbox, particularly given its reliance on Battle.net and PC-specific interfaces. Still, Blizzard’s work on controller support and Microsoft’s changing hardware strategy appear to be moving in complementary directions.

Meanwhile, World of Warcraft: Forever is already generating considerable excitement ahead of its November 4 launch. Blizzard has said the beta’s reception has exceeded expectations, repeatedly increasing server capacity as players flocked to the new version of Azeroth. The game is intended to exist alongside modern WoW and WoW Classic, with additional raids, dungeons, quests, and other WoW: Forever exclusive content planned after release. Whether that enthusiasm eventually translates into a dedicated Xbox version remains unclear, but Forever could prove important for more than just nostalgia.
