Highlights
- In the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, The War Within, the Earthen race will have a generic American English accent, unlike their Dwarven cousins.
- Players are surprised by this decision, as Dwarves in WoW have had strong Scottish accents for years.
- The distinction in accents adds a unique flavor to the game, further differentiating the Earthen.
Some World of Warcraft fans have discovered a few voice lines in The War Within alpha that indicate the Earthen have generic American English accents. This came as quite a surprise, as their Dwarven cousins have had strong Scottish accents in World of Warcraft for decades.
World of Warcraft: The War Within is currently in the middle of its alpha testing period. The first four weeks focus tested each of the zones of Khaz Algar, with subsequent weeks opening the whole continent and adding more content each build until World of Warcraft begins the beta for The War Within.

World of Warcraft Fan Notices Hilarious Detail About When Earthen Die
A World of Warcraft fan notices a particularly entertaining detail about characters of the new Earthen Allied Race when they die in The War Within.
However, while exploring the most recent build of WoW: The War Within alpha, some players noticed something interesting about the Earthen. Though most of the voice acting has not been implemented in the alpha yet, certain lines are already in the game, with more being added each week. WoW content creator MrGM discovered one such line recently added to the campaign in the Isle of Dorn. Baelgrim and Adelgonn, two members of the council that leads the Earthen, share a brief exchange – but as heard in the video he shared on Twitter, they don’t have the characteristic Scottish accent typical for Dwarves, instead sporting an enunciated American English one.
The Earthen of Khaz Algar in WoW: The War Within
- The Earthen in The War Within look like slightly-taller dwarves with stone skin.
- Despite many similarities, their cultures are quite different; they are created, rather than born, live long lives serving their “directives” before needing to “shut down,” and experience and display emotions in a stoic, pseudo-robotic manner.
- Unlike the Scottish-inspired accents of the Dwarves, Earthen have a generic American English accent.
Scottish-sounding Dwarves are not original to World of Warcraft. The trend slowly evolved over decades of dwarves in Lord of the Rings adaptations but became mainstream with Gimli in the Peter Jackson films. World of Warcraft doubled down on the Scottish inspiration for the Dwarves, but it seems it isn’t using the accent for the Earthen, further differentiating them from their fleshy counterparts.
Fans are curious as to why World of Warcraft made this decision, even if they think making the distinction is interesting. Playable Dwarves hail from other groups of Earthen who succumbed to the Curse of Flesh. With the Earthen sounding like most other Titan-forged races, many are wondering where the iconic accent originated from in the lore in the first place. Either way, once players unlock the Earthen Allied Race in World of Warcraft: The War Within, they can expect their characters to share an accent similar to these NPCs.
