World of Warcraft: Forever will not include shared tagging on enemies in the open world, as Blizzard doubled down on its stance to encourage players to group up and work together when undertaking some quests. World of Warcraft: Forever is currently in a closed beta test until Wednesday, October 21.
World of Warcraft: Forever is a different take on the Classic formula compared to other versions of the long-running MMORPG. Set in an alternate Azeroth that never experienced events from subsequent expansions, WoW: Forever will allow players to uncover parts of the world that were not available in the 2004 release. This includes zones like Mount Hyjal and the magical city of Dalaran. Additionally, the Skyborne will be available as a new race for both the Alliance and the Horde factions. The game’s full global release is scheduled for November 4 at 6:00 PM Eastern.
World of Warcraft: Forever Holds Firm on No Shared Tagging
Although World of Warcraft: Forever has incorporated some features from Midnight, shared tagging of monsters will not be one of them. In response to a Twitter conversation between WoW content creators GingiTV and Nobbel87, Blizzard developer Josh Greenfield said that the company will “hold the line” on keeping tags and drops on a first come, first served basis in Forever. This basis is similar to other World of Warcraft: Classic modes, which Forever takes heavy inspiration from. Currently, shared tagging is available in Midnight, which prevents players from explicitly hogging a monster needed to complete an objective all to themselves. Despite the convenience, shared tagging comes at the cost of making the game a less sociable experience for players. Greenfield said that players must instead socialize and work together to overcome any friction the game throws at them.
While Blizzard admitted there are some ways it can alleviate any lingering frustrations that players may have, shared tagging is not a solution that will be implemented in World of Warcraft: Forever anytime soon. Blizzard principal game designer Johnny Cash concurred with Greenfield’s statement and said that the development team will make adjustments should players encounter any issues completing a quest or objective. Given that World of Warcraft: Forever is still in beta as of this writing, some of the game’s content is still subject to change pending player feedback.
Despite Blizzard’s reluctance to allow shared tagging on specific monsters, World of Warcraft: Forever will include a new feature taken from Final Fantasy 14. Drawing inspiration from Blizzard’s chief competitor in the MMORPG genre, WoW: Forever beta includes an official option to play the game using a controller. Currently, 32 actions can be bound using a combination of holding the left or right trigger and pressing the D-Pad or a face button. This is similar to FF14‘s Cross Hotbar (XHB) system, which has been a staple feature since the game’s beginning. However, it is currently unclear if official gamepad support will extend to Midnight or other game modes.
With World of Warcraft: Forever offering a new way for players to explore Azeroth and uncover its secrets, Blizzard has made its intent clear on keeping the game’s social aspects front and center. Time will tell what changes will be made before WoW: Forever‘s November launch.
