At Blizzcon’s opening ceremonies today, Blizzard shared a brief cinematic teaser for its next expansion, The Last Titan, though it’s being careful not to reveal too much about the finale of the current expansion: Midnight.
Most of World of Warcraft‘s section was devoted to Midnight, focusing on the reveal of the final major patch: Eclipse. In patch 12.2 Eclipse, void harbinger Xal’atath’s various planet soul-eating plots reach their climax, and it’s finally (God, finally!) time to confront her directly. In a cinematic, Xal’atath rips open the doors leading to Azeroth’s World Soul and sends her void armies in.
After showing this, game director Ion Hazzikostas apologized for not being able to show much of The Last Titan, but he did tease that the final chapter of Eclipse would lead into a revelation that would cue up a climax to 20 years of World of Warcraft.
But we did get one, brief look at a snowy Northrend, the Wyrmrest Temple, and something enormous and dark stomping toward it before shooting a big ol’ lazer. And there was a date: 2027. That’s the expansion for now! Hazzikostas says we’ll see more early next year, after Eclipse has resolved.
