Xbox Game Pass recently added the perfect horror game to its roster after the success of A24’s newest horror movie, Backrooms. There are plenty of indie games to sift through on Xbox Game Pass, but this particular co-op offering is bound to help scratch the itch for more liminal space horror after watching Backrooms.
Backrooms officially came out in theaters late last month, and it’s already proven to be a big hit for A24. Director Kane Parson gained prominence online by making art inspired by the Backrooms creepypasta, and A24 gave him the reins to direct his own movie based on the internet urban legend at just 20 years old. The Backrooms myth has inspired a variety of YouTube shorts, fan fiction, and indie games, and Xbox Game Pass just added one of the best to its platform.

Xbox Game Pass Adds Escape the Backrooms in the Wake of A24 Movie’s Success
Escape the Backrooms was added to Xbox Game Pass on May 28, and it’s the perfect game to play with friends who are both Backrooms movie fans and co-op gamers. The reviews for Backrooms have been overwhelmingly positive from both critics and viewers, so it’s not surprising that Xbox Game Pass decided to bring Escape the Backrooms into the fold.

For those who haven’t played Escape the Backrooms, it’s similar to other indie horror games like Lethal Company. Players can form squads of up to four players as they explore and try to survive through the horrors of the Backrooms. There’s also an option to play solo for those who aren’t into multiplayer. The game features over 30 different levels, and each one can be more disorienting than the last. Exploring creepy mazes that lack detail builds an atmosphere that is scary enough on its own, but the strange entities that lurk throughout the Backrooms is what takes the scares to the next level. Escaping and avoiding getting killed by these otherworldly beings is the main goal, but the confusing layout of the Backrooms makes that easier said than done.
Escape the Backrooms is just one of many horror games inspired by the Backrooms creepypasta, but it’s one of the strongest adaptations. The game’s atmospheric dread and focus on multiplayer makes it a great way to experience some serious scares with friends. It boasts a minimalist UI, voice chat, and an anxiety-inducing ambience that adds to the overall immersion. An environment that draws players fully into the experience is what makes a strong horror game, and Escape the Backrooms might be the best way to feel like one’s actually living out the horror of the Backrooms movie.
