Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty has commented on the ongoing development of The Elder Scrolls 6, revealing that he’s seen the game in action and that it will be revealed at the correct moment. Some believed The Elder Scrolls 6 would finally show up at the recent Xbox Game Showcase 2026, but yet another no-show left many disappointed.
Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls 6 with a cinematic reveal trailer in 2018, seven years after the release of Skyrim. At the time of writing, it has been exactly eight years to the day (June 10) since that announcement trailer, with no other official content released since. This has been a cause of major frustration for fans, with Bethesda’s Todd Howard even asking fans to pretend the studio didn’t announce it. In hindsight, it was an error for Bethesda to announce the game so early, one that the studio has already reflected on.
Starfield Trend Means Good News for The Elder Scrolls 6
Starfield breaks a pattern among Bethesda’s mainline games, and that could signal a welcome change coming with The Elder Scrolls 6.
Speaking to Variety, Xbox CCO Matt Booty was asked about the weight of expectation for The Elder Scrolls 6 during showcases, where the Bethesda logo appears, only to reveal another game entirely, leaving some disappointed. Booty describes it as “one of the more challenging balancing acts of someone in a job like mine,” where “you want to go show the world all the cool stuff you’re working on, and you want to get them excited early, but we also know that we want to wait till the right moment. And when you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got.”
Booty followed up by suggesting that when The Elder Scrolls 6 does reappear, it may not be long before it releases, saying, “And also that when you show the game, you’re also giving them a promise of, hey, it’s coming soon.” He himself claims that he has seen the game in action of late, revealing, “So I can tell you, having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen ‘Elder Scrolls‘ playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time.”

Official news on The Elder Scrolls 6 has been difficult to come by, but it feels as though, throughout 2026, Bethesda has been a little more forthcoming about how the game is coming along. Back in March, Todd Howard revealed that the majority of the studio’s developers are now working on The Elder Scrolls 6, following the release of Starfield‘s second expansion. This, alongside Booty’s comments, offers some hope that 2026 may hold a little more in the way of ES6 news yet.

Alongside The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda seems to have plenty on its plate at the moment. It continues to release regular new content for Fallout 76, which remains extremely popular almost eight years after its release. There’s also the ongoing rumors of a Fallout 3 remake, which has long been claimed to be in development. However, it’s not clear if this would be – like Oblivion Remastered – primarily developed by Virtuos rather than Bethesda.
