Xbox gamers have until July 27 to download and play a handful of games completely free of charge, only in some cases requiring a standard Xbox Game Pass subscription (noted below). In other cases, these Xbox Free Play Days Promotion games are available to everyone who owns the console.
As with most free game giveaways, the games in Xbox Free Play Days can vary in quality. Xbox Free Play Days did make GTA Online free for everyone last week, though, so there’s definitely some AAA backing to these free game weekend events. On top of that, the headlining games of this Xbox Free Play Days promotion are a handful of Metal Gear titles, so that upward trend is still going here. To try these games out, search the game on the Xbox Store and then choose “Install, Included with Game Pass” or “Free Trial,” depending on the pre-reqs.

Released in 1998, Metal Gear Solid marked a major turning point for the franchise by bringing its stealth gameplay into 3D for the first time. Set against the backdrop of global conflict and the threat of nuclear warfare, Metal Gear Solid delivered a story filled with espionage, betrayal, and political intrigue, and it’s one of the best stealth games on Xbox (or any console for that matter). The Master Collection Version not only ported the games to modern consoles, but they upgraded the resolution, fixed controls, and added some QoL features, too.

Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake bring together the origins of one of gaming’s most influential franchises, introducing the stealth-focused gameplay that would eventually define the series. Originally released in 1987, the first Metal Gear flipped traditional action games on their head by encouraging players to avoid direct combat and sneak through enemy territory undetected, as Kojima spearheaded the then-new Stealth genre. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake expanded on those ideas by introducing many of the mechanics fans would associate with the series, including crouching, enemy detection systems, radar, sound-based awareness, and more tactical approaches to infiltration.
