Xbox is exploring solutions for inserting ads after certain key moments in video games, such as cutscenes and boss fights, according to some recently surfaced patent filings. The proposed system would use game-state data to identify suitable breaks before showing dynamic promotional content, with the Xbox patent explicitly covering everything from PCs to consoles.
Microsoft’s Patent Would Wait for Natural Breaks in Gameplay
As first reported by TechSpot, the new patent application was published in early September 2026 under publication number US 2026/0260258 A1. Rather than interrupting a game on a fixed schedule, Microsoft’s proposed system describes a mechanism for filling what the filing calls a “promoted content trigger event.” Cited examples include the end of a boss fight, completion of a quest, the end of a cutscene, and a loading screen. The patent also discusses moments such as round-end, title, and save screens, as well as safe locations in a game world, with the goal of identifying points where an interruption is less likely to interfere with active play. In that respect, the design focuses on avoiding arbitrary interruptions rather than simply inserting in-game ads into a session without regard for what the player is doing.
