Xbox Reveals Codename for Next-Gen Console, And It Can Play PC Games

The internal code name for the next generation of Xbox consoles has been officially revealed. The news comes after months of rumors about what lies ahead for the future of Xbox, amid a host of major shakeups and departures from the gaming division of Microsoft.

Microsoft first entered the gaming space nearly 25 years ago with the November 2001 release of the original Xbox. Designed as an alternative to Sony’s already popular PlayStation 2 and Nintendo’s GameCube, which was released around the same time, the Xbox featured a range of exclusive titles that allowed it to stand against some of the stiffest competition in the history of the games industry. Xbox became another pillar in the realm of video games, with the massively popular Xbox 360 continuing the trend and helping to popularize online multiplayer with its brilliant implementation of Xbox Live. While the release of the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X/S found the brand falling behind some of its competitors, many fans remain extremely loyal to Xbox’s powerful gaming hardware.

“Hear You”: New Xbox CEO Responds to Requests for Games to be Exclusive Again

New executive Asha Sharma has begun addressing long-standing community feedback, suggesting a possible change in how the brand plans to grow.

Xbox Reveals the First Details of Its Next-Generation Console

The codename and first details of Xbox’s next-gen console have been revealed to the world in a message delivered by the newly appointed CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma. In a tweet posted by Sharma, she describes meeting with Team Xbox to discuss Project Helix, the company’s next-generation machine. Sharma further describes Project Helix as a console that will “lead in performance,” while officially confirming the long-standing rumors that the system will be capable of playing both Xbox and PC games. The CEO plans to discuss more with game studios and investors at the GDC Festival of Gaming, the newly-rebranded event formerly known as the Game Developer’s Conference, which is set to begin on March 9, 2026.

Sharma has repeatedly expressed a commitment to the “return of Xbox” since taking over as the brand’s CEO, a sentiment that is reaffirmed in her tweet about Project Helix. The CEO took over the role on February 26, 2026, after the sudden and unexpected departure of both former CEO Phil Spencer and former president of Xbox Sarah Bond. Bond, who joined Microsoft in 2017, was long speculated to be next in line for the position of CEO after Spencer, who spent 38 years with the company and 12 as the head of Xbox.

The sudden shift in leadership at Xbox sent shock waves throughout the gaming community. Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond simultaneously exiting the company marked the definitive end of an era for Xbox, with many speculating on the future of the brand as a whole. The current generation Xbox consoles, the Xbox Series X/S, have been mired in controversy since launching in late 2020, falling short of the sales of Sony’s competing PlayStation 5 hardware. Despite this, many fans have remained loyal to the brand, and a handful of upcoming titles have the potential to revitalize Xbox in the eyes of many gamers.

The announcement of Project Helix, along with the confirmation of Microsoft’s plans to integrate PC games into the platform’s capabilities, shows that the company’s commitment to Xbox’s future remains steadfast. Although many fans may have expressed apprehension about the company’s future in games, including concerns from one of Xbox’s former co-founders, Sharma and Team Xbox appear determined to revitalize one of gaming’s most beloved brands.
