Yakuza: Like A Dragon Is In Roblox And Seeing Kiryu Like This Weirds Me Out

Sure, we’ve gotten a bunch of realistic depictions of Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s Kabukicho-inspired setting of Kamurocho throughout the series. Almost every Yakuza game will take you to Kamurocho in some form. But have you ever felt the need to explore it from a new perspective? Have you ever felt like, you know what, Kamurocho is cool, but I wish I could wander through the city in Roblox? Well, if you have, you’re in luck.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios chose to surprise players today with a new Roblox game inspired by the series set in the city. Yakuza Blocks: Like a Dragon is an officially licensed multiplayer experience inside Roblox that recreates Tenkaichi Street inside Kamurocho within the game’s engine. As you explore, you might find yourself embroiled in street fights, using a range of fighting styles and leveling up your power as you fight. Experience earned in fights can be distributed between Mind, Technique, and Body, and there are also minigames based on the series’ many secondary experiences available. The fights themselves take advantage of the series’ signature Heat Action mechanics, too.

Yakuza Blocks: Like a Dragon is out now on Roblox! 🐉

The game is developed by experienced Roblox developer GeekOut, which plans to expand it based on feedback and activity. Considering the game also offers microtransactions including costumes for Kiryu and other characters in the unnerving style all Roblox characters appear to embody, strong sales of those skins will likely also be a factor on future development.

Of course Yakuza is far from the first series to take its IP and transform itself into a Roblox experience, with everything from Attack on Titan to One Piece also making the jump. And it’s not as if a series like this is necessarily out of place inside Roblox, either—the platform is known for its young playerbase (and at times for its failures to protect those players from harms on the platform), but many of its players are now adults who grew up with Roblox and continue to play it. It’s partially why the company has introduced new, more mature experiences to the service in recent years. Notably, though, Yakuza Blocks is not a mature experience despite all of the console games falling into that age demographic.

The bigger question is: Is there an overlap between Yakuza and Roblox players? That I’m less certain about, but I’m sure Sega is hoping this can at least serve as a way to promote the franchise to new players.
