Lego’s newly revealed Jedi Master Yoda character bust is one of the ugliest Star Wars builds I’ve seen from the company in some time. Move over, dopey-looking Chewbacca, there’s a new ugly Lego king.
On March 23, Lego unveiled two new Star Wars character bust builds: Darth Vader and Yoda. Both sets are coming out in April and will cost $50 and $40, respectively. These aren’t the first character busts from Lego and seem to be inspired by the company’s Iron Man bust, though they are smaller in scale. They seem more in line with Lego’s small-scale helmet displays featuring iconic Star Wars headgear, like Luke’s X-Wing flight helmet and Mando’s helmet. But there’s a reason Lego mostly focuses these builds around non-organic helmets or characters wearing helmets. You see, Lego bricks just aren’t great at recreating characters with soft flesh, hair, and skin. If you need proof, check out the new Yoda bust.
Oh my gosh. That’s not a great-looking Yoda! Everything below the neckline looks totally fine! And I like that lightsaber build. But it is impossible to look at this brick-built Yoda statue and not immediately focus on its ugly face and its teeny-tiny eyeballs. The bulbous pieces used to recreate the famous Jedi master’s mouth also don’t look good. It looks like Yoda is puckering up his green lips to give a big kiss. And while I understand why the ears are built that way—the designer wanted a flat inside surface—it just looks bad and seems like they were put on backwards.
Credit to the Lego designer behind this build. They were given a very tough task. Creating a decent-looking Yoda out of Lego pieces isn’t impossible, but to do so at this scale with a $40 price tag limiting how many pieces you can use and making sure that the finished product is stable and easy to build is a tall order.
At least that Lego Chewbacca from a few years ago with his goofy face, ugly fur, and always-open mouth can take solace in the fact that he is no longer the worst-looking Lego Star Wars character build. And I mean, if we’re being honest, the actual worst brick-built Lego Star Wars character is still Aldar Beedo, aka this horrible abomination from a podracing set released in 2000. Yoda’s not even close. But let’s not remember that thing, okay?
