Despite originally launching as an isolating single-player action-horror experience, longtime fans of BioShock can finally enjoy the underwater terrors of Rapture in multiplayer, thanks to a unique community-made mod. BioShock has long been hailed as one of the best action-forward horror games of all time, and players can now jump into the high-octane tensions in co-op.
While earlier games like Resident Evil 4 certainly introduced a much more action-packed gameplay style compared to the average horror release at the time, 2007’s BioShock brought an entirely new gaming experience to FPS fans and horror aficionados alike. The blend of unique magical Plasmid abilities and snappy gunplay in the visually striking underwater Art Deco city of Rapture made for an impressive adventure that would eventually earn it a place among the best video games of all time. The subsequent sequel and even the third entry in the series were met with their own accolades, though certain audiences have continued to wonder why an official co-op mode was never released. Luckily, a recent fan-made mod has now made it possible for BioShock to be played in multiplayer, and early reactions could bode well for the mod’s further development.
BioShock Together Mod Brings Co-Op Gameplay to PC
Developed by solo modder VoidCrownStudios, “Bioshock Together” is a Nexus Mod that allows players with BioShock Remastered on Steam to play through the first game’s entire campaign in two-player co-op. While still in an early Alpha Playtest state, “Bioshock Together” is touted as a cooperative multiplayer experience in which players can simultaneously fight against enemies like Splicers and Big Daddies, complete machine hacking together, pick up story quest items, and “progress through Rapture as a team.” VoidCrownStudios has confirmed that the mod has officially been used to complete the entire campaign of BioShock Remastered “from start to finish” with actual character models and synchronized world interactions.
Surprisingly, “Bioshock Together” lets each player make their own Little Sister decisions, granting both users to choose between rescuing or harvesting the iconic horror gaming NPCs. Additional mod details include a useful Partner Location Marker, paused synchronization when exploring separate levels, and both LAN and online game hosting. It is key to note that players will need to ensure both users own BioShock Remastered on Steam for Windows, both have the same version of “Bioshock Together” installed, both select the same difficulty when starting the game, and neither has any other mods active nor installed. Once these parameters are met, players can dive into Rapture together.
Modding communities have long enjoyed making unexpected adjustments to their favorite games, with hit franchises like Skyrim, Garry’s Mod, and Minecraft among the most popular titles that have maintained dedicated fandoms almost purely through mod packs released over the years. Whether “Bioshock Together” will help to draw more interest in the almost 20-year-old title remains to be seen, but other mods, like the VR mode for BioShock, have already caught the attention of first-time players. Interested fans can follow along for any potential updates on “Bioshock Together” and other BioShock news and community projects.
