A YouTube content creator took the iconic platformer Super Mario 64 and turned two of its levels into an immersive viewing experience that users can play with right now from any supported device. As one of Nintendo’s most iconic titles, Super Mario 64 was the Super Mario franchise’s first foray into 3D platforming.
Super Mario 64 first launched in Japan in June 1996 before making its way to North America three months later. Nearly a decade later, Super Mario 64 received an enhanced port to the Nintendo DS in 2004, simply dubbed Super Mario 64 DS. While additional Super Mario 3D platforming titles have been released by Nintendo over the ensuing years, Super Mario 64 is considered one of the N64’s killer apps that defined an entire game console generation.
Super Mario 64 YouTube Video Turns the Game Into an Immersive Ride
Though Super Mario 64 has only been officially released on Nintendo platforms, one content creator turned the timeless platforming game into a new YouTube experience for fans to peruse. A YouTuber named Rovertronic shared an “immersive POV experience” of Super Mario 64 on August 14 that converts some of the game’s early portions into a video that requires closed captions to be turned on. Users can turn left and right on a pre-determined path through the first rooms of Princess Peach’s Castle, including a route that takes them through the first mission of Bob-omb Battlefield. The video experience concludes with the game’s first fight against Bowser.
The Super Mario 64 YouTube experience by Rovertronic is part of a growing trend of video games that have been turned into immersive videos. In July 2026, a YouTuber named Atlas Arcade released a Mario Kart video that allowed users to steer left and right along a portion of the Rainbow Road course. Players could use either touchscreen controls on a mobile device or the A and D keys on a keyboard to turn their cart and avoid obstacles. While it is no substitute for the full experience, the Mario Kart immersive video gained over two million views within two months of its release.
Since the YouTube video of Super Mario 64 only covered a small sample size, gamers who want the full experience have a few ways to do so. Along with playing an original copy of Super Mario 64 on a Nintendo 64 console, users may also play the iconic 3D platformer on a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 system via the Nintendo 64 app on Nintendo Switch Online. However, an active NSO membership with the Expansion Pack upgrade is required to access the N64 app and the games that come with it. An individual Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership costs $50 per year as of this writing.
While other gamers have beaten Super Mario 64 via unconventional methods, the appearance of the iconic N64 title on YouTube is another way for fans to experience it. It remains to be seen which other retro games will be turned into immersive YouTube videos.
