Players eager to try out Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake now have the chance, as developer Koei Tecmo launched a free demo on all current-gen platforms ahead of the game’s release. Koei Tecmo also confirmed that any progress made while playing the demo of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will also carry over into the full game.
Originally launched on the PS2 in late 2003, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is a third-person survival horror game set in the mysterious Minakami Village. Players take control of two sisters named Mio and Mayu Amakura as they seek to escape the village, which is haunted by vengeful spirits. Mio can use the Fatal Frame franchise’s signature Camera Obscura to battle Minakami’s otherworldly spirits by taking pictures of them. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly was re-released on the Wii in 2012. However, the Wii version of the classic horror title was exclusive to Japan and Europe. Koei Tecmo stated that Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake was made from the ground up, with the graphics, gameplay, and sound all receiving some significant changes.

With Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake set to launch on March 12, gamers can now get a head start on playing Koei Tecmo’s upcoming horror title. The free demo of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is now available for players to download on their platform of choice, including the Switch 2 and Steam. The demo was first launched on March 5, a full week ahead of the game’s launch. Koei Tecmo stated that the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake demo covers the early stages of the game, and that save data can be transferred over once the game is available worldwide later this month.

Pre-orders of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake are also available, starting at $49.99. Players who buy the game before March 25 can earn early purchase bonuses, including new hair ornaments for Mio and Mayu to wear. The Fatal Frame 2 demo requires approximately 13 to 15 GB of storage space, which is half the amount listed in the full game’s main specifications. Koei Tecmo stated that the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake demo was cut from part of the full game, and clarified that some of the specifications may be different from the final release.
Given that Koei Tecmo’s upcoming title is a remake of one of the PS2’s best horror games, the recommended specs for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake are not too steep for PC players to meet. A six-core processor, such as the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 XT or newer, and a graphics card with at least 8GB of video memory, like the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or newer models, will be enough to play Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake at 1080p using the game’s standard graphics preset.

One of the new mechanics of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is hand-holding, which allows Mio to take her sister Mayu’s hand to console her, giving players a new way to express the bond shared by the two siblings. The Camera Obscura also received some upgrades, including new focus and zoom settings, and some filters that can be swapped out to add a new layer of complexity to the game’s combat and exploration. New areas around Minakami Village can also be explored, and some new side stories will shed more light on the village’s tragic and horrific past. With Japanese folklore being one of Fatal Frame 2‘s main focal points, it remains to be seen what secrets players will uncover in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake that weren’t present in the original version.
Additionally, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will have a collaboration with Konami’s Silent Hill f in the future. Koei Tecmo stated that some cosmetic outfits will be available as DLC, though the company did not state what those would be.
